I totally acknowledge the swans get decent crowds week in week out. What I dont acknowledge is the premise that "AFL has the biggest crowds in sydney". Sorry folks, but this simply aint true. no no no. In fact, one could say the opposite is true...if one were to stoop to equally ignorant provocative dribble.

Any comment on the huge differential in AFL and NRL crowds in Sydney on Friday night? Maybe I should make a thread and see if we can find an answer to why Sydney dont attend RL!

If there were 9 competitive AFL teams in sydney, as there are Rugby League teams, the avg attendance to AFL in sydney would be about 5013...max.

Yeh Beaussie as a RL fan(although i do not dispise AFL as much as some in this forum) those crowds for the 3 NRL games are not good! there is no other way to say it!

Phelpsy you asked for RL fans to give opinions on why and here are mine;

*the rain - it played a massive part for two of those games (tigers & penrith). they were played at suburban grounds that do not have good cover. I know that the swans game had rain as well but it was torrential on Saturday whilst on Friday night the rain was not heavy.

* the location of the grounds - the SCG being located near the CBD makes attending a game there alot easier and attractive for fans specially on a wet day (alot of swans fans would have already be in town finishing work compared to still deciding to drive to a suburban ground on a wet day to watch a game).
this does not excuse the rabbitohs, there ground is easy to get to.

* the position on the ladder and the time of year - Sydney people only attend games if that team is winning, the swans are premiers and look like they will be close again, penrith and wests are neither real prospects to finish in the top half of the comp (actually both are lucky Parramatta are so poor all else they would be wooden spoon contenders). Also around state of origin the NRL crowds also drop off, this i think is due to most teams missing their best players or there best players being fatigued/under strength. Again this does not excuse the rabbits, they sit on top and i would expect much higher than what they got.

* marketing - the AFL does a good job advertising their games on tv,radio & newspapers (both main and local). the NRL is very poor at this, and although i have seen a slight increase in marketing this year on radio and tv, its still not enough.

At the end of the day the weather was a major player in the poor crowds which no one can ultimately control, but the NRL needs to get its head out of its a** and fix up its marketing/promotion of games. Just because its the biggest in NSW and QLD doesn't mean they do not have to spend decent money on promotion. The AFL do it very well and the NRL need to do similar, for example on NINES today show they went to a journalist who was in brisbane for someshit (lol i cant remember maybe something to do with school holidays or a hospital etc) and in the background was a Brisbane Lions mascot. I know this example does not show a direct promotion of an AFL premiership game, but just the presence of the lions mascot helps promote that team (even just a little bit). The NRL need to start strategising with their marketing/promotion which i think the AFL smartly does.
