Why is that ? The game is obviously popular in Sydney ... It's the main code. But they struggle to get people to nrl games. People have suggested that nrl is better to watch on tv ... But if this was the cause of low crowds then why do we get Hugh crowds at state of origin ... Wouldn't people stay at home and watch it on tv if it were better ? The problem is that a vicious cycle starts, low crowds mean poor atmosphere, which translates in reducing the experience of those who go, this going to the game becomes less attractive. With SoO it is the atmosphere of the crowd that sees people wanting to go I feel... There is a passion that comes with being at the game. Same with AFL, go to a game and hear 80000 at the G or 35000 at aami or 40000 at subiaco or even 30000 at the SCG and hear the crowd roar and it is infectious.. You want to go back. So we know the nrl has a good product , but how do we get people in Sydney to go to games and create the atmosphere it so desperately needs... It even comes across poorly on tv. In qld, I could be watching the local state competition and get the same feel for the game as I do when watching a poorly attended nrl game. Both look unprofessional and both have slow boring commentary .
The other issue I hear is that people don't want to go to the effort for such a short time ... That is , the game day experience is too short. I wonder if they would ever think of extending a game to may 4 quarters of 20 minutes? I don't know rl that well so maybe it's not viable, as it is a game of genersally building up to something maybe 20 minutes isn't long enough to do this. But just a thought. If people feel they can make a day if it they may go more? The fact is you are getting 26000 to an AFL game in Sydney and only 5000, 6000, 11000, to nrl games in Sydney. So there had to be another reason other than weather and transport.
Just some thoughts, probably nothing new, but the head people must be scratching their heads as to how to increase crowds, as they obviously have a product that the people of Sydney love. Maybe they need to reduce teams in Sydney as too many maybe diluting the market.
The other thing is, with the wallabies winning and interest peeking in that code, that is quite popular in Sydney and qld , if the ru people capitalise on this, what will that mean for the nrl and to a lesser extent , the AFL in Sydney. I think the swans are safe as they have a loyal niche market. Problem for ru is that it is the national team that garners the interest ...

people turn up for the state of origin?
no one turn's up to leagues games
the rugby union has no problems getting people to the games,
Super Rugby 21,321 the average for last years domestic comp compared with the RL's odd 14k,
League seems to have a lot of celebrity followers thanks to the packer & channel 9 days. it gets very generous coverage in the media due to News Ltd's media out lets & foxtel. thanks to this the overall popularity of League is vastly over rated

Oh oh oh, you missed one phelpsy...Or 5000 at skoda? :_<>
This thread is inaccurate and invalid.
Through the swannies at the SCG, the AFL has the biggest crowd in Sydney SOMETIMES.
Through GWS at skoda, the AFL has the smallest crowd in Sydney ALL the time
There, that's better. Now carry on folks, carry on with the cold hard KE delivered facts nice and clear in your lil peabrained noggins.
Avoiding the trolling , do you have any suggestions for the poor turn out to nrl games in Sydney KE. I mean do you want a serious discussion or just want to troll ?
For what it is worth , I think GWS, despite being in their second year and a start up club in a non traditional AFL area and nrl heartland , Di need to start drawing bigger crowds for the same reason I mentioned above re Nrl clubs in Sydney ... That is atmosphere at the game will draw people back . 5000 or 6000 may be okay for some nrl people but it won't cut it in the AFL. To fix this they need to win. Suns already had a strong base of a culture of AFL already existing on the Gold Coast .. But they needed to have the season they have had ... If they hadn't it wouldn't have been so good for them this year. Gws don't have an established AFL culture to fall back on. So you will see I think gws recruit we'll next year ... And recruit names. Buddy Franklin will be one .. For 8 million over 5 years he would be crazy not to go ... But I think that it will be a mistake ... But the profile he has, even in western Sydney , may be what is needed. I'm told him and ablett are the only household names in western Sydney from AFL. A but like slatter in Melbourne. But the question is, how do the nrl improve their crowds ??
THe NRL crowds are improving, albeit slowly. So I see no probs there. I just wanted the title and discussion in this thread to be well informed and accurate. GWS are the worst drawing pro sporting team ive ever seen. Actually if one takes away their home game vs the swans, they may well be the worst crowd drawing professional sporting team in Sydney's history,
Swans had crowds of 3k when they first moved to Sydney. They've now been the highest drawing club of any football code in Sydney for 18 years in a row. I honestly don't understand the argument here. We know GWS crowds are small (often comparable to 'heartland' nRL crowds, but small nonetheless). It's a 20 year project, and we're a patient bunch. It's simple deflection from the topic at hand: The Swans outdrew three nRL games in the same city. It's astonishing. In a million years the Storm would never achieve this, and that's at the heart of the issue:
Why can the AFL premier in Sydney outdraw three nRL games, but the nRL premier in Melbourne can't outdraw a single AFL game? If the Storm aren't drawing crowds now - at the height of an unparrallelled period of success - how are things going to turn when they're not winning premierships?
I'd like to see a comparison, controlled for Sydney's total population in the 80's and in 2013, between swans worst year of crowds in the early days vis a vis gws in 2013. I'd bet gws, minus their Sydney swans game, would be lower
Now we must acknowledge the fact that the AFL has the smallest crowds in Sydney.
I know its not nice for you guys but its the truth.

Perspective provided, now im a happy chap.
Carry on now lads.
how so eligh?
the NRL crowds are a joke for what you guys argue to be the biggest & most popular sport in Australia. buy deflecting this on the the GWS. considering that they are an expansion team from scrach, dropped in to NRL heart land, in to their second year being thumped buy 80 plus points each week. when you line up some of the NRL teams like penrith panthers, Parramatta Eels, west tigers, Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks all playing out of the west of sydney who get similar sized crowds, with having the luxury of being establish for 50 plus years still cant draw much more. the NRL crowds are up, 1.16% overall on last years figures, which is fair and well, but coming from pretty pathetic numbers,
You can 'consider' away all you want there adam/aka Chewbacca's illegitimate child. Facts are facts and the title of this thread could just as easily be "AFL has the lowest crowds in Sydney" or "AFL has the lowest crowds in sydneys history" or possibly "AFL draws the lowest crowds in the history of professional sport in Australia". You get my drift ya big smelly wookie?
You see lil Chewbacca, oh and phelpsy and drac you clowns listen up too, beaussie has intentionally provided a title to provoke. Unfortunately for him and you three baaing sheep though, the title itself and the meaning of this thread is fundamentally flawed. You thickies prob cant see it but ive pointed it out clear as day.
I'm afraid this thread is a gonnas...unless you brain damaged monkeys acknowledge the truth.

Nrl crowds are really poor. If crowds of 5000 and 6000 are deemed acceptable in a city where the code dominates then that's a problem in itself
