I dont recall seeing to many articles from CH 7 or 10 talking up the league, other than what they've said in the past. I think the media are just speculating. It's common Knowledge that league is the better product

How sad!

NRL fans proclaim their game as the superior game for TV but the NrL are losing the ratings. Last round the AFL had nearly 5 million viewers, the NRL less than 3 million.

So the NrL is no good live at the ground and less people watch it on TV than the AFL!

Until recently, its interest had been confined to high-rating Friday or Monday night matches - but that has changed. "We want it all," said one Ten source last night.

What I hear at Channel Seven is that they dearly want State Of Origin. To get a billion dollars, the NRL will have to package up their product separately," Johns said. "Everyone will have a slice of the pie."

You might be right, it might be speculation. Maybe it is the NRL talking itself up, indicating that other channels are going to make big plays on their product.

The Daily Telegraph’s report that Channel Ten want to televise all eight National Rugby League matches every week from 2013 should come as no surprise given how Channel Ten have struggled in the ratings thus far this year and will only continue to struggle given that they have lost the rights to televise the AFL, their line up for this year is paper thin.

People are turning to other forms of entertainment that may not necessarily be the square box in the lounge room even with all the choices of television programming around and its why TV stations are more reliant on sport and news as way of gaining revenue from advertisers which is why the NRL will be in high demand especially from a station like Channel Ten which is struggling and will continue to struggle with only Formula 1 and Moto GP being of any real interest on ONE this year so winning the rights to NRL telecast is important for Channel Ten.

Its why the AFL got a billion dollar deal, had nothing to do with expansion of the competition or anything like that, had more to do with desperate Channel 7 TV executives saying “Live AFL will get people watching our station meaning more revenue from advertisers” hence the amount of money thrown at the AFL and it can be guaranteed that once this three month period is over, the NRL will see some astronomical figures from Channel Ten and whoever else is interested, its also why Channel Nine will be like a dog with bone, they won’t lose the NRL coverage without a fight because their programming is thread bare, how many more repeats of the Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men can people put up with, however this season will be a test for Channel 9 given the fans have had it up to their necks with delayed coverage of games and decisions not to show certain matches, round 1 being a case in point.

Talk that Ten want to televise all eight games, possibly nine should expansion happen, is not all that surprising either. There’s afternoons and nights during the weekends of the NRL season that they wouldn’t have to fill with movies that people have seen on other stations or rubbish attempts at entertaining TV put to air and they’d rate through the roof in NSW and QLD thus extending the shelf life of certain programming and also would rake in a motza for advertisers.

As I say, Channel Ten’s bid is no surprise but people should welcome it with open arms given the stale and tired nature of Channel Nine’s coverage of NRL.

Im easily confused, however there is a lot of people on footy forums saying that channel 9 have made an inital bid for over 1 billion dollars. Is that fact or is that just speculation. Surely this initial bid would be confidential otherwise other networks would know what they have to bid to break the first and last rights. People seam to be assuming that C10 have also now made a bid. Again is this fact or speculation.

No bids from Channel 7 or 10. The Channel 9/Foxtel bid is expected to be less than $1 billion.

A DEDICATED National Rugby League channel on Foxtel is back on the agenda as the pay-TV channel and the Nine Network submit their bids to retain the NRL rights today.

In their most important job since taking control of the NRL this year, the commissioners will start assessing the Nine Network and Fox Sports bids for broadcast rights, expected to be less than $1 billion.

We can confirm that the written offers have been formally accepted through a legal office," a commission spokesman said.

"Only those directly involved in the negotiation process will be aware of the details of the offer. As much as we can appreciate the interest in the rights negotiations, there are strict and binding confidentiality procedures involved.
"The NRL has for some time expressed its confidence in achieving a substantial increase in rights fees based on rugby league's dominance of television ratings."

This is why a lot of the speculation about the NRL deal and the money they will recieve is just that speculation.

So when can we expect bids from Channel 7 and 10. Are they even interested? Do they even have the funds? Me thinks they're not really intersted with Channel 10 only keen on V8s and Channel 7 happy with current AFL arrangements.
