The AFL are over the defensive mire that has shackled it for 7 years now. This year has seen teams attack and break defensive lines more than ever and crowds and ratings are skyrocketing! =D> =D> (go bombers!! :D )

Meanwhile the NRL is in the grip of a defensive epidemic that is boring fans, resulting in a reduction in ratings and crowds.

Good times. Good times indeed! :D

THE stars of the NRL are divided over the "wrestlemania" saga with even Broncos teammates trading opposing blows on the controversial tackling scourge many believe has made rugby league boring.

But Broncos skipper Sam Thaiday said the new-age defensive methods were here to stay and hit out at critics who believed "wrestlemania" had made games slow and predictable.

"That's rugby league in 2012," Thaiday said yesterday. "It changes; it evolves every year; it gets tougher, and it's become part of the game.

"People say it's boring to watch but it's just as tough and just as physical to play at the moment.

"I'm sorry. We'll try to score more points. We're doing our best."

Hmmmmm, a boring epidemic!

Cross, who now plays rugby for Balmain in the sub-district competition, said he'd noticed the decline in the number of tries being scored in league and that the the code's ''x'' factor is diminishing.
''I have noticed there is a lot less tries in league, the wrestling at the play-the-ball is so slow, and it's becoming frustrating to watch,'' Cross said. ''I love my league but there is a lot of wrestling, the play-the-balls seem to be taking forever so the defence gets set. I think in union the [action] has got a little bit better. I don't know what the percentage of [rugby league] tries from kicks is, but it seems as though they're scoring a lot of tries off them. The footy hasn't been all that great this year, although you do get a good match now and again, but it has been pretty frustrating.

And more boring talk.

RL, game in crisis. It's lost it's x factor!

Yes i think the AFL has finally overcome its 5-10 year battle against boring flooding tactics. RL will no doubt take about 1/1000th of the time to overcome any issues it currently has. The AFL still has to overcome tanking, which appears to now be beginning earlier than ever in round 2 and a lopsided comp. Severe issues indeed, i just hope the AFL can get its act together quick on these issues. Otherwise it'll become more established and will take atleast 5-10 years for the issues to be resolved.

Please show me a team that is tanking and explain how they are doing it thanks

Nice try to change the subject too!

Well the subject is currently on how the codes overcome their issues, so the tanking subject is very relevant. I think Melbourne are just licking their chops at the thought of the super draft, and their performance on the field shows it. But as you say its difficult to be sure with this tanking, we'll just have to wait and see. The evidence is certainly pointing that way though.

''There is wrestling in the game, and I would prefer that there wasn't, but until the tackle is complete or we call held there is nothing illegal about it. We jump on the ones that are illegal, like the chicken wing … but anything else is not illegal.
''It becomes illegal once the referee says: 'Stop it, get off him, held, move,' or whatever call he may make. That is when you impact on the speed of the play-the-ball, that is when we penalise you, that is what is in the guidelines and that is what we have been doing.

Hmmmm, seems like the refs aren't going to stop these defensive wrestling tactics that are making the nRL such a bore! The tactics are legal.

This is a huge issue facing the nRL and the fix is not as easy as our RL friends would have us believe. [-(

And ah how many lame blowouts have occurred in the AFL this season thus far? Averaging about 4 a week
I'm going on articles and comments made by RL fans KE. They're voicing their concerns over the state of the game! It's on the nose and ratings and crowds are suffering! #-o #-o

Meanwhile the AFL are coming out of an era dominated by defensive game styles, and ratings and crowds are at record levels.

The comparison is stark my friend, stark indeed.

This thread is on the NRL and sensationalised remarks about the code being boring after one comment relating to one game. Keep on topic please [-X

Both comments relate to defensive boring play that has effected both codes. This is the very topic of the thread. Maybe the NRL could follow the AFLs lead again and do something to counter their current crisis.

And Tanking is clearcut issue which causes the AFL comp to be boring...Pinhead.

The NRL has contemplated this issue already and will moniter and take actions as required and all in a transparent manner. The AFL has taken 5-10 years to resolve flooding and looks like it will take another 5-10 to resolve the tanking issue. The actions appear to be undertaken, albeit very slowly and without transparency. The comparison between the two codes is quite revealing.

Good, you agree flooding is dead.

What are we going to introduce two more expansion teams?
The introduction of GC and GWS put a definite end to tanking.

So gone are two minor issues. Boring is endemic to the rl game.
Nice try Cos.

Tanking is not a clear cut issue!

Even if it existed how does it cause boredom!

Any potential loophole in the draft system that may have been viewed as encouraging tanking has already been closed with the recent changes to the priority pick qualification.
