In April 2010, the NRL stripped Melbourne of their two premierships (2007, 2009), three minor premierships (2006-08), fined the club $1.6 million and cancelled their competition points for that season for salary cap breaches over a five-year period.

Yesterday Waldron lamented that the NRL, unlike the AFL, did not support the outpost clubs, especially those supported financially by News Corp (publisher of The Australian).
“There is no excuse. But what actually happened is that we ran a business that we wanted to be successful for ourselves but also for the game. We were a flagship team, like the Swans in Sydney,” Waldron said. “I was always frustrated by the fact the AFL had the wisdom as a commission to say ‘We need the Sydney Swans to be successful’.
In July 2010, News Limited, now News Corp Australia, released an audit of the Storm’s books completed by Deloitte which found the cap breaches were above $3.17 million over the five years and not the original NRL estimate of $1.7m
