AND the winner is ... Sydney.

Six weeks ago the prospect of the GWS Giants and Sydney Swans playing against each other in a final any time soon were in the realm of fantasy.

Think again.

The Giants’ stunning 78-point demolition of Carlton combined with their upset win over Hawthorn has them 5-2 and sitting in fifth on the ladder. With 15 games remaining the Giants need only seven more wins to secure the magic number of 12 and a finals berth.

There was never any doubt the Swans would contend again and Saturday night’s 43-point win over Geelong confirmed their class.

As Queensland teams Brisbane and the Gold Coast Suns struggle, NSW is carrying the flag for the developing states.

With the Swans sure to be contending for premierships in the coming years and the Giants surging Sydney’s AFL fans are in for a treat in the coming years and could see ANZ Stadium hosting a Swans-Giants final in the not too distant future.

The chance of the scenario unfolding can be improved this weekend with both teams facing pivotal matches.

The Swans return to the scene of the crime when they take on Hawthorn in the grand final rematch at the MCG.

A win over the reigning premiers would heal some of the mental scarring from their 63-point belting in the season finale.

A Swans victory would also reduce the Hawks’ record to 4-4 and put them in danger of missing a vital top four spot.

The Giants will be facing some demons of their own when they take on Adelaide at Spotless Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Crows have thrashed GWS every time they’ve met and have an average winning margin of 108 points from their four encounters.

The worst result came at Spotless Stadium in round seven in 2013 when the unheralded Tom Lynch kicked 10 goals.

Lynch will most likely be in the team which takes on GWS on Saturday but the home team will be far better equipped to handle him and the rest of the Crows’ potent forward line, including Coleman Medal leader Eddie Betts and captain Taylor Walker.

Co-captain Phil Davis is expected to return for the match after being a late withdrawal from Saturday’s match against Carlton with a corked thigh.

We were a flagship team, like the Swans in Sydney,” Waldron said. “I was always frustrated by the fact the AFL had the wisdom as a commission to say ‘We need the Sydney Swans to be successful’.

In July 2010, News Limited, now News Corp Australia, released an audit of the Storm’s books completed by Deloitte which found the cap breaches were above $3.17 million over the five years and not the original NRL estimate of $1.7m
