Fark!!!! First Rugby and now the a league in massive trouble! Looks like Australia just isn’t big enough to support 4 professional football codes.Beaussie wrote: Tue Mar 19, 2024 4:27 pmGees so much for the Matilda’s popularity awakening the so called sleeping giant of Australian football.

Not often I ever agree with you Terry but yeah.. true. The AFL and NRL absolutely dominate all other sports.

The North Eastern Code
The Most of Australia Code
There isn't much else.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.
Rugby league, Australias most popular game in some of North Eastern Australia.

If all of NSW and QLd were like Victoria is in regard to RL I would agree. However Aussie Rules is very strong in Riverena and has a strong presence within NSW and a very strong presence in QLD, particularly South East (and Port Douglasazif wrote: Wed Mar 20, 2024 10:20 amthe main most populated part of Australia codeQuolls2019 wrote: Wed Mar 20, 2024 9:41 amThe North Eastern Code

So yeah - if NSW and QLD were like Victoria is in regard to RL there may be a valid point to state "two most populous states follow RL) - but they aren't.

the 20 million more Australian eyeballs watching NRL then AFL in Australia last year say you're not even close to being rightFred wrote: Wed Mar 20, 2024 10:35 amIf all of NSW and QLd were like Victoria is in regard to RL I would agree. ). So I don't think counting the majority of the population of QLD and NSW is reality - whereas you can be pretty sure by and large, in Tassie, Victoria, S.A and W.A RL has a very small presence. It is getting better in victoria with the Storm getting followers and grassroots growing a little - but from a very very small base - from may 10 to 13 clubs over past years (still 1 league). W.A has been doing some work also at grassroots too.
So yeah - if NSW and QLD were like Victoria is in regard to RL there may be a valid point to state "two most populous states follow RL) - but they aren't.
support for AFL in most of NSW & QLD is niche at best ,
having a presence is irrelevant if you can't convert that into a deeper interest ( soccer is the proof) .... apart from the ex pats watching AFL in nsw & qld . its still a weird little sport that is not resonating with locals
