Interesting to revisit this thread. I would think the AFL is bigger than soccer in Queensland and would be close to if not more popular than Union on many metrics.
I would think the Lions are the biggest sporting club, membership wise in QLD.... just like the Swans are in NSW and their tv audiences, like the Swans in NSW - would monster your average soccer or union game. Take last night as an example with 72,000 FTA viewers alone in Brisbane for the Lions without taking into account Kayo and Fox Footy numbers. The soccer meanwhile involving the Brisbane Roar had a paltry 11,000 audience nationwide.
