Fan debate: has the AFL become boring?

THERE is growing concern that the AFL product is in decline.

That constant tinkering of the rules has slowly ruined the spectacle.

Richmond legend Kevin Bartlett has been leading the argument, and this week accused the AFL Commission of knowing “stuff all” about the game.

Bartlett, who has been pushing for a reduction in interchange rotations, warned soccer “will kill’’ Australian Rules within 20 years unless the commission made moves to get rolling mauls and the kicking backwards, possession-style of football out of the game.

“I don’t have any faith in the AFL Commission, I don’t think they have any idea about the game,’’ Bartlett told the Herald Sun’s Mark Robinson.

“They might be captains of industry, they might know how to run Woolworths or a Bunnings, tell you about finances and what to buy on the stock exchange, but I reckon they know stuff all about footy.

“Think 20, 25 years down the track, if you don’t have a point of difference, if you have a rolling maul of players running around the ground, then soccer will kill Australian rules football.”

On Monday night, Fox Footy commentator and AFL great Gerard Healy weighed in on the debate, speaking about the death of the full-forward.


“Melbourne lost to West Coast and at one stage it was 100 points to nine, but Melbourne had more possessions than West Coast,’’ he said, referring to their round two clash.

“A contest within a contest doesn’t exist in the AFL game.’’

Another concern surrounds the leeway of the holding the ball rule, with umpires this season seemingly giving players far more opportunity to release the ball, leading to endless scrimmages while players wait for the ball to pop free.

he recently stood down/pushed from his position on the rules committee last march.

so in his eyes thinks the game is getting boring, its his fault with all of his over the top constant rule changes,

they cannot cap the interchanges much more due to the amount of running players do for the 100 minutes they are on the field the average player apparently runs 12-20 km

prehaps he needs to hop along & see a Storm game, that will teach him to shut up for a change
he would be out of AAMI park way before half time, legging it across back to the MCG, back watching a real game being played
