What is the more popular sport in Melbourne, Victoria?
It's obvious that Aussie Rules is the top dog in this city + state, but what is #2 after it(if we exclude cricket from the conversation all together) Soccer or Rugby League?
Just curious as another user brought up an interesting point in the crowds thread that the two sports don't really go head to head, but what about in general?
Melbourne has 2 A-League clubs, only 1 NRL club
Membership numbers:
Melbourne Victory : 22,021
Melbourne City: 7,307
Melbourne Storm: 15,343
Regular season AVG attendance:
Melbourne Victory: 21,808
Melbourne City: 9,933
Melbourne Storm: 15,607
I don't have information on TV ratings, but if anyone could provide them that would be cool. But I think the Storm will win that one with all the interstate people tuning in to watch them but it would be interesting if it was kept solely Victorian.
Melbourne hosts multiple Socceroo matches every year although only 1 game was played there in 2013, Australia vs Oman which drew 43k, and an Australian Kangaroo+State of Origin match every now and then.

There's is just ONE RL club for the Eastern suburbs - there would be 100 soccer clubs - my son was going to play RL but the side couldn't get enough players! Very pathetic!

TV ratings are in favour of RL.
Crowds in favour of soccer.
RL goes head to head with AFL
Soccer is a sook and hides.

Re: What is the more popular sport in Melbourne, Victoria?
how are the ratings like in melbourne for storm games vs victory games? anyone found anything on that yet
keep labellings me as an AFL fan pretending to be a soccer fan lol, you don't have the intelligence to think up something better + it shows how easily your buttons get pushed
after soccer i don't have any bias preferences to either AFL or nrl. just observations

holy crap thanks for that mate, man im surprised, so the a-league does outrate the nrl in melbourneThe_Wookie wrote:Individual city ratings were only supplied by mediaweek twitter for the first four rounds of the Aleague season, with a 5th data point at rnd 11, at an average of exactly 40. The NRL's Melbourne ratings sit at 21, or 31 with origins. (AFL Melbourne ratings are at 309, VFL ratings are at 34).sydneyfc wrote:It's obvious that Aussie Rules is the top dog in this city + state, but what is #2 after it(if we exclude cricket from the conversation all together) Soccer or Rugby League?

fair enough but i was originally of the opinion that the hal didn't rate well in victoria so i was pretty surprised to find that it does solid vs nrl and vflThe_Wookie wrote:its important to remember though, that Aleague ratings are taking from 5 data points (from 30 odd matches), and may not be truly representative.

Re: What is the more popular sport in Melbourne, Victoria?
Grassroots: Soccer has RL covered easily, with Soccer just behind AR. RL might have 3000 registered players compared to Soccer which I believe is in the 100,000 + range.
Support locally for the local professional teams: this is the order i have them in
1. Victory
2. Storm
3. City
Storm is just in second But it will be interesting to see what a few bad years does and the Manchester connection to the new City team will be interesting.
TV ratings : for the local teams. Victory and City have the Storm covered, by a little. In terms of Soccer Vs RL: Soccer has RL covered easily. Most Soccer supporters support and watch an international team, EPL teams are common, but also teams like Barcelona, Porto and Juventus ( biggest amount of Italian living outside of Italy is in Melbourne). It's not even close.
Money generated: Storm Vs A league local teams. Storm wins easily mostly on sponsorship and TV revenue generation. Ironically this is mostly generated off the back of TV viewers in NSW and Qld. However the Storm also cost a lot more money to run.

Re: What is the more popular sport in Melbourne, Victoria?
thanks for the input mate, it will be interesting to see how city fair this season both on and off the field. up until now they've been a dreadful team to watch, barely competitive outside a few very good young players that they have developed and sent overseaspiesman2011 wrote:Grassroots: Soccer has RL covered easily, with Soccer just behind AR. with city taking over everything from marketing the club to player recruitment i cant wait to see the changes they will make
they've already made a HUGE signing in david villa which hopefully boosts their attendances greatly because he'll sure as hell boost away attendances with him playing. they've already signed damien duff and are in the hunt for tim cahill as their aussie marquee(but so is my club!) which will said things through the roof.
exciting times for melbourne soccer IMO
edit: membership is tracking well too! up 65% already vs last year

Re: What is the more popular sport in Melbourne, Victoria?
This is a fine example about how factual TFC isn't.
If we look at professional leagues existing in Melbourne then you've left out probably the leading contender RU.
RL - good ratings but nobody bothers to attend rl games.
RU - Doesn't have the FTA ratings but better attendances and better grassroots.
AL - Doesn't have the FTA ratings some good attendances but is played in summer without football opposition and of course has the best grassroots outside of AFL.

It's a no brainer for soccer ... But the question, maybe a new thread, is what is bigger in Sydney, AFL or soccer.
