NRL Commission a toothless tiger!

Post by Swans4ever »

With Essendon receiving a 2 mil fine - Hird given a 12 month suspension and others at Essendon staff also receiving sanctions the AFL proved themselves willing and able to deal with doping in its sport. The NRL on the other hand can only impose half the fine even if it wanted to. Clearly an indication that the NRL commission views this as not a concern (as no attempt has been made by them to increase the penalties available to the commission). Nor has it sought to impose safe guards to suspend staff who are now with other clubs (which it can't). What a mess!

Cronulla is bracing for a $1 million fine from the NRL over corporate governance issues relating to its controversial supplements program in 2011.
With the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority investigations now likely to drag on into the new year, the ARL Commission is finalising its own probe of the club.
Sharks insiders believe the result will be a seven-figure hit, a huge blow for the only club without a major sponsor in 2013.

Cronulla operated without a chief executive officer during the period in question and a lack of resources forced some staffers to perform the roles of several employees.
A $1 million fine is the maximum the NRL can impose under its anti-doping violation rules, although other sanctions at its disposal include deduction of points or grants.
Ironically, Cronulla's tenuous financial position means it may have to ask for an advancement of grant money to pay any fine.
It has been a tumultuous season for Cronulla, with the club at the centre of the ASADA investigations into drugs in sport, which began with a press conference alongside the Australian Crime Commission.
ASADA and the ACC announced they believed footballers from the major codes used banned peptides and human growth hormones that were provided by well-organised criminal networks.
So far only former Canberra, Roosters and Penrith winger Sandor Earl has been sanctioned as a result of the ASADA investigation.
The program was allegedly introduced to the Sharks by controversial sports scientist Stephen Dank.
Coach Shane Flanagan was stood down - along with doctor Dave Givney, physiotherapist Konrad Schultz, football operations general manager Darren Mooney and trainer Mark Noakes - by the former Cronulla board for the first two rounds of the 2013 premiership while directors and then chairman Damian Irvine investigated the claims.
Flanagan was re-appointed after sitting out the two rounds but Givney and Mooney were left on the outer. Noakes was eventually re-appointed, despite the NRL asking the club to delay the move, and Schultz was recently recruited by the Canberra Raiders.
Essendon coach James Hird, who was suspended for 12 months by the AFL, said he accepted his suspension after conceding he needed to accept some responsibility for what had happened and failing to do more to stop it.
He said he accepted the ban for the good of his club and the game.
Hird, who will return to Essendon when the ban is completed, was replaced by his assistant coach Mark Thompson.

Essendon where charged with "bringing the game in to disrupt", so please provide evidence of whee the illegal drugs where taken?
the ASDA report will be out early next year to we will see then what becomes from it

the NRL had no idea on what the club was doing as the NRL, trusts the clubs run their own drug testing
saying the club and coach had little knowledge of what was going on is the called playing dumb, and for someone like you ratarderdave who is dumb do not understand this
in a million dollar business where people are being paid big salarys. & the people paying the bills do not know what they are paying for is utter rubbish

Essendon did not admit to a program using illegal or banned drugs idiot!

Essendons investigation has taken 10 months and not one charge has been laid. In fact 5 months after their investigation ASADA stated they had insufficient evidence to lay charges. Cronullas investigation has taken as few as two months and according to Masters today charges are coming for most of Cronullas players within 2 weeks.

Here's another difference.

Essendon were open about the issue and it was them that brought the whole Dank issue out in the first place.

Cronulla has closed up shop.
