Richmond with record profits and now Hawthorne 3.12 mil gee could this be the start of a pattern?


Hawthorn’s premiership year has come with a bumper pay day, the AFL club banking over $3 million.


The net operating profit of $3.12 million is up from the 2012 result of $2.02 million, increasing on the back of record membership, crowds, merchandise and other investments.
The Hawks’ 2013 final membership tally was 63,353, while their Melbourne average home attendances surged from 44,629 last year to 52,809.

President Andrew Newbold was pleased with the result and forecast strong future investment in the Hawks training base.

“Our club faces a major financial challenge over the next few years as we implement our goal to make the Ricoh Centre a world’s best practice training and administration centre,” Newbold said.

I thought that AFL clubs didn't need the money made from soul destroying poker machines? I have read in BF on numerous occasions that Unlike NRL teams the AFL teams make enough profit from merchandise and sponsors and memberships that they don't have poker machines and large gambling facilities like the NRL. Well all that seems like utter shit....

Didn't the AFL only in the last few months blabber on about being against profiting from people with gambling issues in their community?!

Look it's good to hear that the hawkes's financial situation is good, I'd like to see all sporting clubs no mater what code in similar safe hands, I'd specially like to see the a-league get an even better tv deal next time even if that means the big two get less then what they're worth.

I just don't get how some ppl in this forum bag RL clubs for doing the exact same thinydas their beloved AFL teams do, what's good for the goose......

Also the AFL have formulated a good equalisation fund that create new income streams to be directed at clubs that are not sheduled for blockbusters.

I don't know that this profit is the SOLE result of gaming machines - after all Westwaters hotel is a joint venture - thats also ignoring an extra 10k membership sold this year. I don't bag NRL about gaming machines - but I did say Parra was being a hypocrite when he posted that thread on AFL clubs having gaming machines when NRL has had them for over 40 yrs - Raiders couldn't exist without their parent company having substantial interests in hotels with gaming machines. So anyway as regrettable as it is its a fact of life now days.

Just as long as the revenue stream isn't reliant on the pokies. NRL clubs in Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong have a history of it given how long pokies have been in NSW. Hawthorn aren't reliant on it as we have all ably demonstrated.
