AFL going great in NSW
With some regular RL posters telling us that AF is dead or dying above the Marray - here's the 2012 break down of participation in that state - in contrast RL with its 2700 total participation really looks insignifigant and irrelevant in comparison!
NSW/ACT NUMBERS REACH RECORD HIGH
As AFL participation grows across the country, NSW/ACT experienced an unprecedented boom to become the second-highest ranked state for AFL player numbers.
AFL NSW/ACT has released its 2012 participation numbers and is pleased to report that this year NSW/ACT has recorded an unprecedented number of participants across all programs, and is now ranked second in total participation in Australia.
NSW/ACT recorded an increase of 7339 participants in Auskick programs, making the total NSW/ACT Auskick player number of 48,965 the largest in the country for the first time in the program’s history. Percentage growth in the Auskick numbers in Sydney South (137.78%) and Greater Western Sydney (43.37%) was particularly exceptional for the year.
AFL NSW/ACT General Manager Tom Harley said the growth in participation was an outstanding result for the emerging market.
"2012 has been the biggest year for Australian football on all levels in NSW and the ACT, so it naturally follows that we’ve seen a big jump in player numbers," he said.
"With the GWS GIANTS making their debut this season and the Swans winning the flag, it has been a great year to be involved in AFL in NSW/ACT."
"We’re so fortunate to have both a premiership winning club in the Swans, and to be able to watch some of the AFL’s most exciting young talent at GWS right here in Sydney."
The Greater Western Sydney region recorded the highest growth in NSW/ACT, with total player numbers increasing by more than eight thousand to 36,460 – a growth of 28.74 per cent.
Harley says AFL NSW/ACT staff have made a tremendous effort to increase the number of participants in all programs.
"Everyone has worked exceptionally hard to leverage the increase in AFL football in NSW/ACT to an increase in participation at the grassroots level."
"We’re pleased that our total participation number of 148,230 ranks us second behind Victoria for the first time ever. It’s wonderful to see so many young girls and boys playing Australian football, and it certainly augurs well for the future of football in NSW/ACT."

Yes was reading the report last night and noted that they break it down into school based, after school, auskick, juniors, seniors so people can't say numbers are fudged with school based and after school. Also had 9s as well.

he showed how FUDGING in numbers is done to hide the reality.
The AFL's boast of vast increases in participation numbers in western Sydney is misleading, according to a report commissioned by one of its key stakeholders.
This month's report, prepared by a Melbourne University academic at the request of AFL NSW/ACT, supports what many rugby league administrators have been saying for some time - the AFL is using registrations in its modified game of Auskick to bolster actual playing numbers.
The research appears to seriously question a claim last month by an AFL NSW senior official that participation numbers in the western Sydney region have grown by 27 per cent, or 10,000 players, in a single year.
Under the heading, ''Western Sydney - The Reality versus Perception Gap'', the report's author, David Lawson, notes: ''The reality is that junior club maturity and participation numbers appear to have stalled. There are 6 [per cent] less junior/youth players in 2012 than in 2009. The perception, however, is that the game is growing well. This perception is supported by masking low junior club numbers with Auskick numbers (Club, School and Community Auskick) and school program numbers. This optimistic, bullish perception is needed to market the game, however this perception urgently needs to be underpinned by committed junior club participants.''

Re: AFL going great in NSW
Well what's the correct figure for Western Sydney? Anyway the above report I posted has TOTAL participation for NSW - not just Western Sydney and I said taking away the Auskick figures is still impressive - How's RL doing after 100 yrs in Australia in Victoria, SA, WA and Tas - same level as AF in NSW and QLD - no it's just a fraction and pretty irrelevant - so before you start telling us AF is doing poorly in NSW lets compare codes in each other's heart land - you won't because you know the answer!

If he "knows" the correct figure for Western Sydney he'll give away the FACT that he doesn't live in Queensland, Swans!!
I've seen the NSW numbers in senior AFL on TLPG's website. I've seen Victoria's numbers in rugby league on Sporting Pulse. AFL in NSW wins easily!

Re: AFL going great in NSW
Rl is pretty non existent really in vic given that it has such a large following just in the other state several hundred kilometers away. Hockey, basketball, baseball, are all bigger ... I would say it would be one of the least played sports compared to other sports. It may be on par with American football maybe.

Re: AFL going great in NSW
The only real indicator of interest or growth is registered players in club copetitions,& very very strangly the AFL ,wont ever release those.
& I know why.
read david Lawson.he let the cat out of the bag.
& Swannie ,you do know that AFL house has been caught out lying about numbers .it happens regularly.
as a fan of a sport I would rather know the REAL picture ,not the bullshit
