AFL - record revenue in 2013

The AFL is set to double its profit and hit a record mark in revenue this year, despite a turbulent season marred by several off-field controversies.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou told Financial Review Sunday the league is set to exceed its budgeted forecast of $12 million net surplus and record revenue of about $440 million in 2013.

The league’s surplus for 2012 was $6.7 million from revenue of $425 million.

Demetriou said the league was able to find about $10 million in cost savings in the year to October 31 as well as additional revenue from an increase in crowds and commercial income, including its digital AFL Media unit.

Undoubtedly the AFL has had a good year especially when compared with last year.
All the KPIs are up - attendance, membership, sponsorship, ratings and merchandise.
Capital expenditure is way down which previously dragged down the bottom line - BISP, Skoda, Metricon and numerous smaller ovals around Sydney are now complete.
The number of AFL clubs struggling is at an all time low and next year we can expect to see major improvements at Melbourne and GWS. We also can expect to see major improvements and adjustments to the equalisation mechanism so clubs denied natural justice by exclusion from blockbuster fixturing receive adequate compensation.

Compare that to the nrl. Well I'm not because there is so much fudging and spin going on.
All we need to know is that one, (possibly two at the very outside) nrl clubs are solvent.
