Multicultural round in western sydney

Post by King-Eliagh »

Yep folks, that's the way they're promoting this rounds AFL match between melbs and gws in the eastern sydney skoda stadium.

Fair enough and a touching thought but seriously, one sideways look at the gws lineup and its not hard to decipher that its a majority monocultural rather than multicultural lineup. Its a lineup which stands in stark contrast to the ethnic makeup of western sydney, the market the AFL so naively and ignorantly stepped into just a few years ago. For a sport to become established in an area it needs grass roots participation and success. And at the moment I dont think masses of kiddies in western sydney can see themselves reflected in the top grade side. So my question to all and sundry is:

Should gws be looking at recruiting skilled players not only to stop them getting thumped to high hell each week but who will also increase the multicultural makeup of the side to more reflect western sydneys ethnic makeup?

And if so. Is this actually possible in the current AFL player base? In comparison to RL we all know the AFL has a fairly monocultural player base. I'm pretty sure it couldnt be done. You may get a few but then, melbourne is also a multicultural city and those teams imo also dont reflect the ethnic makeup of the city. But please, name some possibles you AFL folk. I hear some bloke called ahmat just got done for drugs so i guess he's out.

Well there's not many of those minorities playing the game part of GWS aim's to break down barriers so these kids will start playing the game - don't know how that is fairing in Western Sydney but in the east of Melb I can tell you there are many kids of Sudanese, Vietnamese, Chinnese, Greek, Italian and Koori backgrounds to name a few. In time they will be better represented in the AFL kids with talent are kids with talent regardless of race - so in time there will be players that will be representative of the community - until then we have to have some sort of platform to encourage them to pick up a Sherrin!

Fair and honest points swines, there's not a large multicultural makeup in the AFL, they're well behind the nrl in this regard, perhaps 20 years. So well said.

I'll admit that some of the western teams in the sydney football league have a fairly multicultural makeup. Middle eastern folk running around are more common than you'd think.

Ahh skoda is not "west of sydney". It's IN sydney numbnuts. And sydney stretches west to penrith. Take the centre point between bondi and penrith and tell me whether skoda lies east or west of that point.

I know NRL has some Lebanese players but aside from 5% Koori players and 36% islander players do they have many Vietnamese, Chinese, Sudanese players? Not having a shot just interested if the demographics are across the board?

Think its more like 11% Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander players. They have a few players of asian and several other ethnic backgrounds. Dont think sudanese though. Impossible to have demographic across the board as you say but there's a strong multicultural presence in the nrl, not really the case in the AFL imo.

nRL fans get confused when it comes to directions. Don't the WESTS Tigers play out of the SFS which is in Sydney's eastern suburbs?

Geographic FAIL!!!! There's a reason why the area between Sydney and Skoda is called INNER WEST!!!!!!!

KE, the AFL has a different ethnic mix than the nrl. Nobody's "better".
Skoda is West of Sydney CBD or Sydney proper.
By your logic, nothing is West of Sydney because it's all Sydney.
Nice try Cos.

Lesson time stewie. 'Western' suburbs magpies were a foundation rugby league club playing out of pratten park ashfield from 1908. In 1908 syd was much smaller than today and Ashfield was truly part of ws. Not so today mate, cities expand.

You think those AFL honchos down in melbs knew this?
