Gotta agree with Robbo on all of this. But really, rugby league players acting like thugs and animals... what's new in that neanderthals sport?RUGBY league bared its soul in a horrible week for the code.
This primitive combativeness with an oval ball, which northerners term a sport, should be ashamed of itself.
Life is about teaching and educating, setting standards for others to at least make them try to understand right from wrong.
Rugby League is not helping.
It undermines parents and teachers and governments who are hell-bent on making society a safe and respectable place.
The actions this week and the response from the defenders of the sport were caveman like.
On Monday night, New Zealand Warriors player Russell Packer urinated on the ground.
That's the nicest way to put it.
To be more descriptive to emphasis the animal-like aspect of Packer's act, he stood on the field, spread his legs and pissed himself, the contents of which were seen dripping down his right leg.
Packer shook himself as a dog would do. Why? Who knows, because the deed was done.
A player in one of Australia's national codes actually pissed himself and the rest of the world laughed.
Yep, Rugby League, you should be proud of that.
Packer was fined $15,000.
"When u gotta go u gotta go lol," he tweeted after the match.
Social media aside, this mentality is not 2013. It's more 2013BC.
Rugby League chiefs should be embarrassed.
Embarrassed that their code's education programs, which are run through schools and learning centres, somehow allows a player to think it appropriate to use the ground as a urinal.
They should also be embarrassed by their punishment. He doesn't even miss a game.
Then there was State-of-Origin, a kind of Olympics for all cavemen.
Wednesday night's assault of Nate Myles by Paul Gallen was lauded widely across the nation.
He set the tone, they said.
It was the cornerstone of victory, they trumpeted.
That Gallen got a one-week suspension for the combination left-right and uppercut, was even condemned by Myles, whose brain must have been rattled when he said the ''fight adds theatre to Origin''.
I know it happens, it's a contact sport played by men who like to inflict damage, but, still, it can't be tolerated.
Gallen got one week for it, and slaps on the backs from the NSW coaches, his teammates, and most likely all of New South Wales.
If it happened in the AFL, which seemed to be the question most wanted answered in the aftermath, he would be looking at 10 games on the sidelines.
And most sound observers would agree with the punishment.
It's a strange world.
Every weekend there for a while, Sunday morning newspapers carried stories about young men being punched and killed at Melbourne bars and nightclubs.
The follow-up on Monday would be his parents.
They are heart-wrenching stories. Mums and dads weep and shake and every bloody one of us looks at them and thanks God it wasn't your child or someone you knew.
Police lament at the insanity of it all.
It is insane. One-punch heroes become murderers.
And police once again implore parents and teachers and state governments to help stamp out violence.
Then Origin comes along.
Violence is not only an appeal, it's accepted as the norm.
Psychologists, I'm sure, would argue the glorification of such acts filters through the streets.
I'm also sure others would argue that it's men v men, playing for the pride of their state, and that I'm just an AFL sucker-job trying to get a backslap from headquarters.
It's not about that.
It's about identity and self-worth, about what you want people to think of you as a sport.
Rugby League failed this week.
At least the beers were cold in the NSW changerooms. Anyone got a bottle opener?

He said he was unhappy with the decision at the time.
His mood wasn't helped by the one-game suspension handed to NSW's Paul Gallen in Wednesday night's Origin opener - for landing a flurry of punches on Queensland's Nate Myles that would have attracted far greater penalties in the AFL.

Sure it is Raiderdave, sure it is - your blokes wouldn't know how to run - No one in NRL could run out of sight on a dark night in fog! All fat, unskillful boof heads like you! Doesn't take a great deal of skill to throw the ball my 1yr old can now do that! But I guess it's perfect for simpletons - like you!Raiderdave wrote:Stewie wrote:Sorting out things like taking a piss on the ground?eelofwest wrote:Wow 2 players sorting out things on the field and leaving it on the field,

A $15,000 for urinating on the field and no suspension is unacceptable in every sense of the word.
It should have benn $100,000, two weeks suspension and compulsory toilet training.

Ugly scenes on the footy field deterring parents from allowing children to play
DAVID SYGALL June 09, 2013

Marc Flior and his children, Tyler and Casey, love many sports and had fun watching the State of Origin together. But the idea of them playing junior rugby league is out of the question.
''I wouldn't let my kids play league. It's not a debate or discussion,'' Mr Flior said. ''My kids understand that I want them to play a sport that they enjoy and won't get injured.''
Tyler, 10, and Casey, 8, play for Easts Football Club, where their father is the vice-president. The pair were keen to be involved in soccer, partly because their father played, too.
On Thursday night, dad and the kids watched a replay of the State of Origin, as the game had finished too late the previous night. But Mr Flior found himself in a challenging position after the NSW captain, Paul Gallen, was involved in a punch-up with Queensland player Nate Myles.
''It's exceptionally difficult to explain to kids that fighting is not acceptable behaviour when they see it in a game like that,'' he said.
''Then they see that everyone's talking about it. I think Gallen made a very interesting comment, that every time you see an advert for these games, they show these incidents. They try to hype it up. It's really a two-edged sword.''

Seems like its not only Victorians who are appalled by the fighting in SOO.
