Another AFL club joins ASADA investigation

Post by Dogs »

Fyi, at the airport and just saw gold coast player nathan bock now joins the investigation. Front page for the gc bulletin. Just thought i should let you know, given the AFL boys couldnt get on this website quick enough when nrl clubs were being named.

I think both codes would agree that we dont want drug cheats in our game. But it is time foe ASADA to put or shut up

I WAS one of the flag wavers for the players and clubs when the ACC and the federal government made their dire announcement about the level of doping in rugby league and the AFL.

They were lonely voices on the other side of the debate who supported the warnings of federal Sports Minister Kate Lundy and the Australian Crime Commission when they claimed widespread doping, match fixing and involvement from organised crime in footy.

The rest of us poured scorn on the process, bagged ASADA's lack of evidence and cried foul over player rights.

I changed my tune several weeks ago when I realised the extent of the allegations. Controversial revelations by Stephen Dank that he had given the late Jon Mannah peptides while playing at the Sharks did little to quell the view that this was all a massive beat up.

While there is now little doubt the media conference was a public relations disaster, today's revelations should kill off any remaining doubt in rugby league's ranks for the need to take the allegations seriously. The players, the Sharks and the National Rugby League have been given a false sense of bravado by those who have said hold your fire and it will all go away.

There was genuine belief within the Cronulla player group and the club that ASADA had botched the investigation so badly that nothing would come of the allegations against the team.

They were buoyed by sections of the media who openly vilified ASADA's processes and urged players to "stay solid".

One columnist from a rival newspaper has been an apologist for Stephen Dank for six weeks.

NRL boss Dave Smith has spent the best part of a fortnight on a witch-hunt searching for the sources of leaks to the media.

Meanwhile, his team of lawyers, advisers and staffers have sat on their hands genuinely believing the stalled ASADA investigation would spell the end of the doping allegations.

The cheerleaders now have a lot of back-pedalling to do

Good on you Eels for posting such an anti league article, good to see you can post stuff from both sides of the fence. Even though it is a Bec WIlson article.

Boak is believed to be that one player from another club, they were talking about at the start of the investigation. Looks like another Dank related hit.

Agree on that both codes dont want drug cheats, however I will have to disagree on the second statement. ASADA should investigate for as long as they need to get to the bottom of all of this mess. There has been a lot of stalling by certain groups to try to make this go away. These groups need to be told that their cooperation is necessary for any leniency in potential sanctions. By stalling the process they simply look guilty before the process has even started.
