NRL lose battle for western Sydney to A-League

Oh dear, what happened to the buzz of a new NRL season.

NRL lose battle for western Sydney to A-League

by: Staff writer
From: The Daily Telegraph
March 18, 2013 12:00AM

RUGBY league's battle of the west - won 28-18 by the Wests Tigers against Penrith - attracted just 9728 fans on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Campbelltown.

The NRL's big threat was supposed to be the AFL, but yesterday's crowd underlines that the real danger comes from the fairytale run of the Western Sydney Wanderers - and a healthy dose of indifference from league fans

Unparalleled support and demand for tickets to Western Sydney Wanderers games has prompted FFA boss David Gallop to petition the state government to build a new stadium for the A-League leaders.

Gallop has already met with sports minister Graham Annesley to discuss the development of a purpose-built Wanderers stadium or significant expansion to their home ground, Parramatta Stadium.

The news comes amid the Wanderers' record 10-match winning streak to put them atop the A-League, and coach Tony Popovic says his team is yet to reach its full potential as they march towards the finals.

When you compare a sell-out crowd for the Wanderers' local derby against Sydney FC to West Tigers' crowd against the Panthers last night it is easy to see the NRL losing ground to the A-League.

The Wanderers and Tigers both have 20,000-seat capacity homegrounds in Parramatta and Campbelltown respectively.

The Wanderer's are selling their fixtures out.

The Tigers can't even fill half their stadium.

Yes interesting stuff with the wanderers. Wouldnt it be great if gws could win a few and lobby govt to build a stadium in greater western sydney rather than residing in homebush, a stones throw away from their market competition, the established (with the transient weekender chardonnay sipping sydneyite crowds) sydney swans?

Homebush is western Sydney dumbarse. I've seen you even suggest as much when talking about ANZ Stadium. Oh and yes, the Giants/AFL did lobby successfully for a new stadium at Homebush. You know, Skoda Stadium.

Meanwhile, and back on topic, what's going on with the abysmal NRL crowds in western Sydney. Never thought I'd see the day that soccer was more popular with the people of western Sydney.

No Beaussie,

It's been proven before on this site that homebush is in the inner western suburbs of sydney. which is by no means greater western sydney. Well the panthers tigers matchup was out at campbelltown. A shameful crowd but totally understandable given the foolish decision to amalgamate balmain and wests. Anyone with half a brain couldve foreseen the culture trend towards balmain and leichardt becoming trendy inner west suburbs which'd more likely support the roosters than any team called wests. MEanwhile the folk out west have been jipped and look to be voting with their feet. A poor move by the nrl all those years back.

But we will see gws suffer a similar fate. Really, if you wanna be called GWS then sit the team smack bang in GWS. This team will never get stong support from those living in western sydney while they dont play there. It's really quite elementary, my dear beaussie.

All it takes to defeat nRL is for a team from a different code to be succesful. Once the Giants are top of the AFL ladder, they too will be getting much larger crowds than the local nRL sides just like the Wanderers are now.

Enjoy the couple of years that the Giants aren't successful, because once they are, watch out.

So the Wests Tigers are rooted? Why not just call them the Balmain Tigers then?

Western Sydney cleary doesn't care for the team and are voting with their feet right? Wake up NRL, are you not listening to KE.

So in the east and north of Sydney Aussie rules is taking over and in the west soccer is dominating. Just one place to go I guess for RL fans. Back to their TV screens.

KE why do yoy bother?
Australian Football fans are not put off by the fact the fact that their team plays away from it's base.
GWS increased their membership on the back of an uncompetitve season.
Very few AFL clubs play out of their home ground, do you know why?
Because sunurban grounds cannot handle the crowds.
Nice try Cos.
