Poker machine and licensed club revenue now accounts for almost 20 per cent of the revenue of the 10 Melbourne-based AFL clubs.
An analysis of the clubs’ 2012 financial reports shows the Melbourne clubs received about $80 million from poker machine venues last year, North Melbourne the only one not to source revenue from gaming.
Total revenue for the 10 clubs, including sponsorship, AFL grants and other income, was about $440 million.
Collingwood made $4.5 million from its gaming premises from revenue of $19.9 million, the highest among the Melbourne clubs.
The 10 clubs have debts of about $49 million, of which about $25 million is related to the poker machines and the licences to run them.
Last year AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou offered the clubs funding to divest themselves of poker machines, but no club has yet taken up the offer.
In comparison, NRL clubs, traditionally funded by their related clubs, are trimming poker machine funding as more money flows in from the new $1.025 billion broadcasting deal.
Penrith, owned by Panthers Leagues Club, one of the biggest in the country, will cut its annual grant from $4.5 million to $1.5 million this year, according to CEO Warren Wilson.
“Gone are the days of walking across the road to the club with your hand out, asking for money,” he says.
NRL clubs will receive close to $20 million in funds from licensed clubs in 2013, down from about $40 million four years ago.
Some of the clubs such as Canterbury and Parramatta have a strategic plan that calls for leagues club funding to be zero within five years.
Parramatta is cutting its leagues club funding this year from $4.5 million to $3 million.

But I thought the ******* clubs were completely against this practice. Another misconception revealed, whats going on at AFL house this year?

You failed to highlight literally the most important part of that sentence: "The 10 clubs have debts of about $49 million, of which about $25 million is related to the poker machines and the licences to run them"Raiderdave wrote:Rabbit wrote:http://afr.com/p/lifestyle/sport/AFL...abj613acQmfxdL

I'm with you on this one Rabbit. No sporting club should be associated with gambling. Gambling is the new tobacco and should be avoided like the plague. It destroys family's and praise should be given to North Melbourne for having no association with gambling. Be happy to praise any NRL clubs who do the same.
Re: AFL clubs punt more on pokies
Yeah but North Melbourne are the club that's worst off financially if I remember.
Gambling has been around for centuries. You can't eliminate it. League has relied on it for decades in Sydney, and it went through a glory period because it was only in New South Wales that pokies were legal. People in Victoria in particular were always going to the border or even Sydney itself for the pokies alone. It's changing but as pokies are now in every state. They are money spinners and the AFL is now copying the NRL. League clubs that are trying to move away from it will go back.

Pretty sure there are still no pokies in Western Australia. And the West Coast Eagles are one of the top 4 biggest clubs revenue wise in the AFL.Striker wrote:Yeah but North Melbourne are the club that's worst off financially if I remember.
