nRL players racist slur toward MKR couple

Post by Stewie »

PENRITH Panthers player Arana Taumata has called My Kitchen Rules contestants Jessie Khan and Biswa Kamilla "curry munches" in a racist tweet posted by the footballer this morning.

This website yesterday carried a story in the news section about the two women finding themselves in the middle of a bitter race dispute following an airing of the show on Monday.

Arana Taumata made his thoughts about the pair clear on the social network.

MKR contestants Biswa and Jessie hated or loved by viewers

"Get them two curry munches off #MKR they are just pure annoying now. Making the programme shit. ???????? #MKR." Taumata tweeted early this morning.

Penrith Panthers were quick to act on the news their player had posted the tweet with Phil Gould to meet Taumata today to discuss the incident.

Taumata also issued an apology on Twitter.

"Just wanna apologise for the remarks I said last night about the two indian ladies on. &#&MKR If I offended anyone I apologise. &#&MKR"

Khan and Kamilla were pilloried on Twitter with celebrity Charlotte Dawson lashing out.

"OK people are being vile and racist over a reality cooking show," Dawson tweeted.

"Check yourself Twitter peeps. Not cool at all."

Taumata has played for multiple clubs during his football career and is no stranger to controversy.

In the past he was dismissed by Storm for an altercation off-field and also pleaded guilty to prescription pad fraud before making his club first grade debut with the Panthers in June last year.
Wow, how fucking dumb are some of these racist animals in the nRL? Are they still yet to realise how viral one racist tweet can go? Instead of kicking the "curry munchers" out of the country, how about we kick the racist sport of rl out?

Curry munchers is racist? Really? I never knew. I guess it is all in the way the term is used... which in the tweet above doesnt seem that racist to me...It's a cooking show after all... I munch curry heaps, it's delicious and Indian folk make some of the best curry in the world.

So ahh. Let's discuss. Is 'pie eaters' a racist term for aussies? i.e. "get those pie eaters off the show!" Or what about 'skippies'?

Most Indians I know are damn proud to share their curry recipes, of which I munch. I spose we gotta remember the context and that there's some sensitivities in this country, which I think particularly built while I was living in the netherlands playing international marngrook matches, due to previous nasty events aimed at Indians... but are we going a bit over the top here? Personally I say yes. If he for instance wrote - "get them two 'dirty' curry munches off" then we have instant negative racist connotations. But he just wrote curry munche(r)s. Maybe i'm wrong though so if anyone knows, please inform me of the development of "curry munchers" as a racist term.

Well seeing as you two pie eating sheilas couldnt come up with anything intelligent in response, yes some things never change, I've gone and done some research myself. Wikipedia highlights curry munchers in its list of "ethnic slurs". So yes it can likely have some negative connotation. However it does not provide any reasoning as to this term being 'racist' like Xman and stewie suggest...probably because the concept of ethnicity is more prominently accepted as a valid concept to define ones background than race. But you two pie eaters wouldnt understand that so i'll move on.

Now :) if we use wikipedia's definition of ethnic slur, on the same page, we will read that
For the purposes of this list, an ethnic slur is a term designed insult others on the basis of race, ethnicity, or nationality.
Now :) the RL player's tweet was tweeted in the context of a cooking show. It was also expressed in 'type', which makes it highly difficult, nigh on impossible, to ascertain whether it was "designed to insult". Given this, I'd argue there are really weak grounds to argue this as a case of racism.

On a side note, I've found a nice rom com made in NZ (Arana Taumata's homeland) which perhaps stewie, you and Xman might like to watch together sometime...with a coupla four and twenny pies? Enjoy! :D

Pookus you show little intelligence. Racism is not nearly as cut and dry as you think it is my simple friend. I'm simply working with the case at hand and providing some intelligent analysis of it for our two resident pie eating southerner bogan sheilas, Xman and stewie. They clearly have little understanding of the intricacies involved, and neither do you. So I'm providing you pie eating, my kitchen rules watching, bogan sheilas who live in the state/city (maybe stewie dont live there but he's all the rest) where some very, apparently, racist things happened to indian folk...or was that a media beatup? i wasnt in the country at the time as I was playing international marngrook for the netherlands so feel free to correct me there.

Ok? :)

No its you that lacks the intellect to understand what is racism and what is not.You cant argue that term isnt racist or wasnt used as a racial slur.Racism is like all forms of evil turn your back on it and it will fester.I have no problem bagging these two high strung little princesses but as soon as you mention their race as if it is lesser then sorry my friend it is racist. There was ample room to hang shit on these two bitches to play the race card lacks intellect and understanding of the issue.

X, that's the reporter's opinion! It's not proven fact! I'm with, El. There's nothing racist about it! Derogatory yeah, but not racist! Since when was "curry" an adjective in a racist term? Curry is eaten by plenty of different cultures, not just Indians!

Talk about making chicken curry out of seedlings!
