NRL crises under Gallop
David Gallop, The 10 crises that defined his tenure.
Bulldogs salary cap breach
Just six months into his tenure as NRL CEO, David Gallop denied the Bulldogs a shot at premiership glory, docking the club of 37 competition points for a $1 million salary cap breach over two seasons. The Bulldogs finished the season as wooden spooners and were also fined $500,000 for the breach.
The New Zealand Warriors were also found guilty of breaching the cap in 2006 for offences relating to the 2004 and 2005 seasons. They were docked four competition points and fined $430,000.
Coffs Harbour sexual assault scandal
In April 2004, Gallop handed down a $150,000 fine to the Bulldogs after a number of unidentified players were accused of gang raping a 20-year-old woman in Coffs Harbour on a preseason camp. Charges were later dropped, but Gallop defended the hefty fine, of the opinion the club failed to behave ''in a way which protected the game's image'' in the months that followed.
Sonny Bill Williams walk-out
When former Bulldogs forward Sonny Bill Williams (pictured below) walked away from the code to play rugby union for Toulon in France in 2008, David Gallop threatened to ban the Kiwi from the game. Gallop later handed Williams a substantial fine and prohibited from returning to the NRL before 2013 unless it was for Canterbury. He's now off-contract and is being targeted by the Sydney Roosters for next season.
The banishment of Todd Carney
After a series of off-field misdemeanours, Todd Carney was sacked by his former club Canberra in 2008. Gallop took a tough stand and deregistered Carney from the NRL and placed a ban that prohibited him from playing in the NRL until 2010, when he joined the Sydney Roosters and guided them to the grand final. Despite several off-field discretions since his return to action, Gallop hasn't handed Carney any other bans.
Brett Stewart saga
Gallop handed Brett Stewart a four-game suspension and dumped him as the face of the game after the Manly fullback was accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl, which he was later found not guilty of. Stewart was acquitted of the charges in September 2010, but he was disappointed with Gallop for handing down the suspension and a perceived lack of support. Gallop stood by his decision and refused to apologise, which culminated in Brett and his brother Glenn expressing their disappointment publicly as they received their premiership medals on stage last year.
Melbourne Storm salary cap rort
David Gallop was at the forefront of arguably the biggest story to rock rugby league in 104 years. He stripped the Melbourne Storm of two premierships and ensured they would finish the 2010 season as wooden spooners, removing their right to compete for competition points after they were found guilty of a $1.7 million salary cap breach over five seasons. Melbourne were also stripped of three minor premierships and were forced to shed several key players, including Clive Churchill Medal winner Greg Inglis. The saga has dragged on for two years, and only two months ago three leading player managers - Isaac Moses, David Riolo and George Mimis - were suspended for six months for their involvement in the Storm's salary cap breach.
Terrorist claims
Having stripped Melbourne of two premierships, Gallop was already one of the most hated men south of the border. But he further angered Storm fans, who took offence to being compared to terrorists in an analogy Gallop used to express his disappointment following the abuse he received when he presented Melbourne with the minor premiership last year. ''I never really go for that whole passion line,'' he said. ''I mean, terrorists are passionate about what they do and, you know, that doesn't make it right.''
Spot-fixing scandal in Townsville
In 2010, Gallop ordered an investigation into the game between the Bulldogs and Cowboys in Townsville that was marred by allegations of match-fixing. Gallop consulted AJC chief steward Ray Murrihy before talking to police about the controversial opening to the game involving then Bulldogs forward Ryan Tandy. He was later found guilty of trying to manipulate the first point-scoring option, handed a $4000 fine and a one-year good behaviour bond.
The near death of the Gold Coast Titans
Gallop didn't have a club fold on his watch, but there were grave fears that the Gold Coast Titans would fail to survive this year after they fell $30 million into debt because of the financial strain of their newly built Centre of Excellence. A team of external accountants has found hidden debt totalling millions of dollars at the football club.

Has there ever been a more hated sports CEO? The guy was a complete dud and a push over. He sold the game out and just let everyone walk all over him and the NRL.
Comparing AD and DG is hilarious. One has expanded the AFL to the premier sporting league in Australia, and the other into a struggling league with no money playing out of rundown stadiums in 2 states.

Some of ya best Dave, some of ya best!

DG can't handle a crisis. His management and PR skills were appalling! He leaves issues to fester. All NRL fans repeatedly complain about how poorly they are treated by the media, and how the AFL get all the good news stories.
Thats just one of the differences in management style.
DG was also reactive, never proactive.
Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/leag ... z29oArYenIWhile details of what the pair discussed over coffee remain unconfirmed, their comments at back-to-back press conferences yesterday left little doubt that Grant believed Gallop's style was too ''reactive''.
The NRL have been copying AFL practices for years. The AFL are the leaders, the innovators. The NRL just play catchup and DGs lack of vision was a primary reason.

unlike the turd who runs your game ...
who hides & hopes they go away ..... the tanking issue being current .. & perfect proof
gallop had to deal with fans who weren't brain washed gimps
so he always had to be honest with them .... & that got him offside with them
but if that fat wombat who runs yr game was running ours , & tried to do to our game.... wot he's doing to yours
he'd of been lynched years ago
strung up
swinging away from an elm in Moore park
I mean.. imagine him trying the line he uses on his dopey constituants .. on NRL fans
oh oh ... but we have great stadium deals
your club is bust & will never compete with the wealthier clubs ever again .. or the nsw clubs .. or .. the new expansion clubs either

so ?
not good enough d head .... lets string him up right here... wheres the noose

VFL fans .... dumbest on the planet

Re: NRL crises under Gallop
If you took a poll of all AFL and NRL fans regarding who is the best CEO and which sport is better placed the AFL would win in a landslide.
No one believes the tripe you dish out Dave.

they .. " believe " their sport is in a better pos .. because they are told it is
but what they actually have.. is a rigged .. manipulated ... contrived comp that is geared toward interstate expansion sides at the expense of everyone else
because their sport has made so little impact over the last 30 years ... it STILL has to do this

what NRL fans have .... is 16 sides..... ALL on a level playing field
ask our fans what they'd prefer ... a dirty comp .. or a clean one.
poll them with the facts not VFL hogwash .....

The list goes on and on, but surely you get the picture Raiderdave.
How are all nRL clubs on a level playing field when the Broncos have the biggest advantage of any club in Australian sport? How many Friday night games do they have again? The easy 7 day rest they have each week is a big advantage as they can accustom to a weekly schedule with ease. The nRL draw is rigged to favour television dollars at the expense of the integrity of the competition. Take SoO for example. Some clubs may lose their best players to SoO which the nRL deliberately puts on a Wednesday night to maximise television ratings. They could have opted for a stand alone weekend, but that would benefit just about everyone but the greedy nRL's bank coffers so they decided against it.
The nRL is a dirty, greedy organisation Raiderdave. Only the thickest idiots like you can't see it though. Is that North Queensland hick that beat his partner twice, once while she was pregnant, still playing in the nRL by the way? Disgraceful.

Re: NRL crises under Gallop
The nRL limps along at 16k crowds, poor TV coverage, 2 clubs outside its heartland, and minimal funds, yet Dqve thinks the NRl are better off!
He also tells us their comp is a level playing field yet their biggest club is essentially forced to take the centre stage of live FTA TV on FN at the expense of many many struggling poorer clubs.
Plus they've had a number of clubs involved in extensive salary cap cheating, denying other clubs of the GF.

The nRL is a dirty, greedy organisation Raiderdave. Only the thickest idiots like you can't see it though. Is that North Queensland hick that beat his partner twice, once while she was pregnant, still playing in the nRL by the way? Disgraceful.

your comp is a dirty uneven contrived load of dogs vomit
expansions sides are allowed to cheat your cap legally so they can poach other sides talent ... the swines have had the VFL pay 20 Million dollars more for their players over the last 30 years then their opponents ... the Storm had 2 comps stripped off them because they went over by just .. 1.5 Million
just putting the word .. legally .. in front of cheating .. does not make it all right.. its still cheating.
its a rort ... & thats just one example of dozens in your dirty .. dirty comp.
you think you may have .. possibly

but sorry to dissapoint.
the Broncos provide about half of the Qld state of origin side more then balancing any precived advantages they get in the draw
the fact they only scrapped into the finals this year proves one offsets the other , its fair , very fair.
nice try .. but as usual where you're concerned .. an utter fail.
