30 years later, the swans have been the highest drawing team of all codes in Sydney for 18 years in a row. The Storm, even before their salary cap scandal, haven't managed a higher average attendance than any AFL club in Melbourne. Not ever North.

As to the Lions, how quickly you forget that they were averaging higher crowds than the Broncos during their golden era. They've been woeful on the field for 3 years now, and still managed higher crowds than South Sydney, Parra, St George, Wests, Manly, Cowboys, Titans, Cronulla, Storm, Roosters, Penrith, and of course, the pathetic Raiders. Their crowds will rise again when they start performing. Also, and just FYI, the AFL GF ratings in Brisbane alone were higher than the NSWRL GF ratings in the ENTIRE COUNTRY OF NEW ZEALAND  .

The Swans had a parade through the streets of Sydney in 2005 and 2013. The people that attended wearing red and white and waving Swans banners were all there by coincidence and were just on their way to lunch to discuss NSWRL though right Dave.

Here's the thing. After our investment in Sydney and Brisbane, there have been dark times, there have been boom times, but they're part of the sporting fabric of those cities now whether you like it or not. It took a lot of blood sweat and tears, and 30 hard years, but that's where we're up to. We suffered through the short term setbacks, both financial and on-field, and we're now reaping the benefits. 30 years ago short sighted people like you wrote of the Swans and the Bears (who both started with lower average attendances than the Suns and GWS) as a collosal mistake, and the death of the League. And here again, the same myopic naysayers gleefully predict that GWS and the Suns will be a great failure, and that it will all amount for naught, and will destroy the league.

You better pray to whatever Gods you hold dear that you're right, because if you're wrong, if the Giants and the Suns stabalise on and off the field and capture the public attention as the Swans and Lions have, there's no stopping us

If the Lions have all but disappeared, how would you describe the NSWRL teams that have even smaller attendances (South Sydney, Parra, St George, Wests, Manly, Cowboys, Titans, Cronulla, Storm, Roosters, Penrith, Faders)?

that all have costs half those of the wions & with extra funding will all turn big profits in 2013 ( hell they probably all will post a profit this year ) while the wions will be lucky to avoid a 4th year of massive financial losses ? ( over 10 mill in the last 3 years)
hmmm I'd say ... in good shape

they have less costs because they have poor sponsorship and horrible stadiums. Who cares if they make a small profit, all that ensures is they will stick around a little longer. With the shocking TV deal the NRL just signed theyll still get poor exposure and little to no improvement in sponsorship.

So, as Drac said, if the Lions are disappearing what does that say about most nRL clubs?

Another brain spasm for Dave. A 2 million dollar loss for a team with a turnover of 35m is as significant as a 1 million dollar loss for a team earning 17m.

Your logic defies belief. Next you'll be telling us manly are better off than Collingwood because they're costs are less.

The Lions average of 20k is small whan you take into consideration how much money is going out the door.

AFL have squads of 50 to pay, NRL have squads of 30 to pay.

AFL also have more trainers/conditioning coaches, assistant coaches then the NRL.........this all adds up to a bigger crowd average which is required to keep these AFL clubs afloat.

Sydney have made a loss for the past 2 years, they will make a profit this year due to there success.

All the rest of the expansion teams are making huge losses, GWS, SUNS, LIONS, PORT.

Eels, the reason AFL clubs have so many coaching and support staff is because they earn the revenue to afford it. They are all non-profit organisations. They budget their costs so they either break even or make a small profit. If they have a year where crowds are down, like Brisbane, then they can make a loss. But remember the Broncos are also down given their on field success. Its more to do with Brisbanes economical climate than anything.

The Swans would be flying if it werent for stadium renovations severley restricting their general admission crowds.

And they have 46 listed players, not 50.

Also, AFL clubs like Brisbane get far better FTA coverage than NRL clubs, and the amount they earn from sponsorships is far higher.

Please show evidence that the Suns and Port make "huge" losses

Do you have a source for this? Without a source this is just more dribble.

For those not familiar with Adelaide btw, Port have an atrocious stadium deal. They need roughly 27,000 people to show up at AAMI stadium just to break even. Any less than that and they actually have to pay the stadium owners (the SANFL, who also own the club) a substantial fee. It's absurd. When they move to Adelaide Oval in 2014 it'll be much better. They still have issues of identity/growth to sort out, but the big thing that's been dragging them down will gone.

They've also been insipid on the field.

Fact, the presentations is not what this is about. The game itself is what this is about, and on that the NRL won. It's there in full colour and you'd be a freaking idiot to say otherwise. Great news for the NRL!
The NRL GF lost when Tasmania and wa are added. The afl presentation rated far higher than the NRL. What's the problem?

Cut out the BS, the AFL ratings were coded into 5 segments to squirm every last drop out of the ratings that they could!

The AFL GF is a 6 hr telecast. How long is the NRL GF broadcast?
