Channel 10 - Seriously Stuffed now without AFL

Silly, silly Lachlan Murdoch and Jamie Packer running the show at Channel 10. Not bidding for the AFL has come back to haunt them, with the ABC now more popular amongst viewers.

On a single-channel basis, Ten is on track to lose to ABC1 for a sixth consecutive week. It has also lost more than 25 consecutive ratings days. Ten has slipped to fourth place on the ratings ladder and shows no signs of immediate recovery

The prevailing feeling in the industry is that Ten's management has made several major strategic blunders in the past 18 months, notably a bad play for NRL rights at the expense of AFL, the net result of which is that Ten is now without a major sport in its schedule.

the only downside to channel 7's commentary is this man

Well for a TV network like 10 they cant afford to be loosing money on the AFL like seven are.....

"Seven would be getting up to $10,000 a 30-second ad, which is $15,000 to $20,000 a minute, so if they can jam an extra 10 minutes of advertisements in, that's $200,000 across a night," Allen said.

"The difference between Better Homes and Gardens and the AFL is that Better Homes is profitable and the AFL is not.

"The NRL rights are profitable, but the AFL's are not."

Networks such as Seven and Ten consistently lose money on their football telecasts, but being a football network helps with cross promotion and general ratings appeal.

Both ch 7 and 9 lose money on the AFL and NRL when taken in isolation. It's the halo effect of extra viewers for the channels overall that makes these deals worthwhile.

I guess you forgot that rugby won't be making any profit for channel 9 over the next few years because they asked for more then what they are worth
