Extract: 2011 REPUCOM International 10th Annual Football Benchmarking Report Australia
REPUCOM International’s Annual Football Benchmarking Report focuses on the health indicators of Australia’s four professional football competitions: Australian Rules (AFL), Rugby league (NRL), Rugby Union (Super Rugby) and Football (A-League). While AFL, NRL and Super Rugby are all winter sports, Football is the only competition to run across seasons and calendar years. Super Rugby statistics refer to Australian based teams only. The following notes are a snapshot of the fuller report.
The 2011 football seasons down under saw yet again the continuing strength of the AFL powerhouse in the Australian football scene. While the NRL punches above its weight in terms of television audience to be virtually equal on both cumulative and average audiences, the AFL are clear leaders in terms of attendances, interest levels, fan bases and memberships.
Sports Interest
REPUCOM’s annual SponsorLink survey has shown that the AFL consistently delivers the largest levels of interest nationally of the four football codes
Major Sponsorship Exposure Value - all inventory
The AFL however continues to deliver greater overall exposure value for its sponsors beyond the major jersey opportunity, with its consistently greater ability to attract overall publicity and exposure for the game. When all sponsorship inventory is included in the analysis, the AFL teams on average deliver $3.6m in sponsorship exposure value to their major partners. This was up 15% on 2010. The NRL are second with $3.1m, slightly up by 5% on 2010.

Imagine what this years numbers will be like. With a massive increase in exposure and audience those numbers will only get bigger. I will admit the nrl does punch above it's weight but that only proves it's a bantam standing near a heavy weight.

Re: REPUCOM - AFL powerhouse in the Australian football scen
The best thing in all of this is there is no means for them to pull this back. No expansion,no extra footy free to air and no plan for growth. But they got some money. At least they might be able to fight union which is making massive strides into the heartland of the nrl. With the a-league also becoming a part of the western sydney landscape I'd say they have a fight on their hands.

It's hilarious how RL types would often quote the REPUCOM findings to suggest RL is the market leader. The facts here clearly tell a different story.pookus wrote:The worlds biggest authority on working out who's biggest.Raiderdave wrote:Xman wrote:It says who wrote it fool!![]()

AFL = No.1
NRL = No.2

Raid is right about one thing. The cumulative audience is 134,000.
