Huge Economic Benefits for Sydney/NSW from AFL

Post by Beaussie »

Only the AFL can deliver such an economic benefits for the states of Australia in this instance the stuggling NSW economy. Any wonder why governments of all persuasions are so keen to get on board with the AFL. $5.8 million. Golly gosh, 'Australia's Game' is huge.

IT MIGHT not be Sydney's dream showdown but Collingwood's massive box-office appeal could provide the AFL and the city's traders with a $5.8 million bonus should they defeat West Coast for the right to play the Swans in next week's preliminary final.

Sydney must overcome a six-year hoodoo to make the grand final should the Magpies defeat the Eagles tomorrow night but the local economy stands to gain more if the city plays host to what Collingwood president Eddie McGuire regards as the biggest football club in the land.

The figures are estimates based on numbers provided by ANZ Stadium, the AFL and the Australian Hotels Association.

The venue is expecting as many as 70,000 fans to flock to ANZ Stadium to watch the Swans play off for a grand final berth if the Pies win, while a crowd of about 50,000 is expected should the Eagles cause an upset.

''Just in terms of the number of fans and members that can get to that game out of Victoria or out of Perth, it's naturally going to be larger if it's Collingwood,'' said Darren Birch, the AFL's general manager of commercial operations. ''We know Collingwood has a very strong supporter base in Sydney as well.''

With the average fan spending $20 at the Olympic venue, the 20,000 difference in the crowd for a Swans-Magpies clash could realise an extra $400,000 changing hands for food and drinks inside the ground.

The AFL also stands to have its coffers considerably swelled by a Magpies win. Based on fans paying $70 for a ''bronze'' seat - the next category up from restricted viewing - the league could collect an extra $1.4 million in gate takings.

The biggest winner, however, could be the tourism industry.

The thought might make many Swans fans sick but officials from the Magpies and ANZ Stadium say 10,000 members of the black and white army will make their way to Sydney to cheer on their side if they get that far.

That's significantly more than the 2000 or so Eagles supporters the venue believes will cross the country from Perth should they qualify, although West Coast followers are accustomed to travelling interstate to see their team play.

Tourism Accommodation Australia, which is a division of the Australian Hotels Association, estimates each visitor spends on average about $500 for ''accommodation, restaurants, bars and possibly sightseeing''.

That means an extra 8000 visitors to Sydney could tip about $4 million into the local tourism industry.

''Games such as these are excellent for Sydney's tourism economy,'' the TAA NSW director, Carol Giuseppi, said.

There would also be benefits for the league's TV partner, Channel Seven, which paid $1.25 billion over five years for the right to broadcast AFL games, should Collingwood advance this weekend.

That would result in a clash during the prime Friday night-time slot between clubs from the two most populous cities in the country.

More than 1.81 million viewers in the five mainland state capitals tuned in to watch the Swans defeat St Kilda in the 2005 preliminary final, as opposed to nearly 1.64 million a year later when Sydney defeated Fremantle for a grand final berth. Both games were on a Friday night.

''When you've got a Melbourne and Sydney team playing, just in terms of population numbers, you'll end up with a higher rating because of population densities,'' Birch said.

The Swans, however, might prefer to meet West Coast next week. Sydney have lost their past 11 matches against the Magpies but are on a six-game winning streak over the Eagles.

Swans V Pies on Friday night could rate 2 million+ nationally on TV, if its a close match and it usually is between these two teams.

Channel 7 would be licking their lips at the prospect of a Swans vs Pies game live around the nation on a Friday night. The tv ratings would be huge.

Personally, I'd prefer Swans vs Eagles. 8-[

I think an Eagles v Swans PF would also rate extremely well given Melbourne will always tune in but it will add big numbers in Perth and Sydney.

Contrast that with all the rl bleaters that want the WA government to chip for a nrl team there.
FFS, WA just built a stadium now rl leaches want more money.
Contrast that with the AFL that has offered money towards the new WA football stadium.

.
Nice try Cos.

It would have been 160-170k easy, and not even prime time. Compare that to the storms prime time ratings.
