Serious question about NRL's direction
Whenever I have a look at rl these days I see more and more players of Islander deccent.
IMO rl has been flawed by pitching itself as the "working man's game" when the AFL pitches itself as the game for everybody. Now having all these Islanders is good for the standard of the game and for promoting NZ but over the very long term is rl going to be seen as the "Islander game" and not a game for Australians. We already have NZ being seen as the home of SH RU maybe it consume rl as well leaving Australia to play Australian Football. I know there is some concern about this in junior ranks.

Re: Serious question about NRL's direction
I posted a link in another thread showing participation rates for players of pacific island background in the NRL toyota cup was around 50%. Clearly their physical attributes suite the sport because that is a disproportionate number of players for an Australian comp. That cant be very encouraging for all kids of other ethnic groups in Australia.cos789 wrote:Whenever I have a look at rl these days I see more and more players of Islander deccent.

Very daunting for juniors that have age divisions and not weight divisions,

Re: Serious question about NRL's direction
What percentage of the Australian and NZ population is made up of Islanders?
Re: Serious question about NRL's direction
I think NZ has a higher percentage, but then the Maori numbers are in play there and technically they aren't Islanders so I'm not sure.
It's worrying. The Islanders are great at the game, but it has an effect on mainland playing numbers and if the NRL clubs start leaning towards recruiting Islanders that's going to have an effect on local league. I think it would place the Storm, the Raiders, the Cowboys and maybe the Knights in hot water and also stop new franchises in Perth and Adelaide. That's bad, and I don't like it.

Re: Serious question about NRL's direction
Pacific Islanders dominating the game will no doubt prove to be a terrible thing for the code and future junior development. Terrible how the game of RL is not more inclusive of all nationalities and body sizes eh?Striker wrote:I think NZ has a higher percentage, but then the Maori numbers are in play there and technically they aren't Islanders so I'm not sure.

Cos you closet racist. These 'Islanders' you talk of? Who are they? You clearly insinuate they are not Australian but somehow different? Mind telling us why?cos789 wrote:Whenever I have a look at rl these days I see more and more players of Islander deccent.

Pfft. One recruiter who didn't even say that was his opinion, vs entire sections of the NSW SOO supporter group racially abusing Players on mass both at the game and on twitter.ParraEelsNRL wrote:Xman wrote:Coming from the racist league of Australia, thats a bit rich! Hellooooo? Cos? Can you answer my questions any better than Xman, who has been unable to argue you're not racist, but argued you're just 'not as bad' as those NSW supporting goons at the SOO.Xman wrote:Coming from the racist league of Australia, thats a bit rich! Thanks for drawing the comparison Xman but I believe that racists are as bad as eachother in their ignorance.
