AFL fudging participation numbers in NSW/ACT

Quote:
THE NSW/ACT AFL has been accused of exaggerating its registered players in the Leichhardt municipality, calling into the question the sporting body's numbers across Sydney.
Before tonight's Leichhardt Council meeting to decide whether Australian football will be played on Birchgrove Oval, the district's sporting bodies were asked to provide certified evidence of their local numbers. The local AFL body, which in its original submission to the council claimed to have 1644 registered players, then reduced that figure to 238.

''It is really disturbing that a professional sporting body would use false statistics to gain access to junior sports grounds,'' said Leichhardt councillor Darcy Byrne, who has campaigned to keep the AFL off Birchgrove Oval. ''Given these revelations it would be plain wrong for hundreds of junior soccer players to be booted off their home ground to make way for the NSW AFL.
''There are now serious questions about how many local clubs across Sydney have lost their home grounds on the back of dodgy numbers.''

Or alternatively they had incorrect data

Interesting how you excluded these parts:
In a statement, the NSW/ACT AFL said that ''in the initial expression of interest, we used numbers that were taken from our registration using a postcode search that inadvertently included neighbouring suburbs that were not part of the Leichhardt Council LGA'', and that ''following the council's request for all applicants to resubmit their participant numbers, we discovered the discrepancy and amended our numbers accordingly''.
The spokesperson said AFL participation numbers that were submitted to a playing partnership meeting last week did not include 536 paying school participants.
''Currently there are over 774 registered (536 school and 238 club) participants who reside in the Leichhardt LGA. The 238 players who reside in the Leichhardt LGA are forced to play in clubs outside the area,'' the spokesperson said.

How does it seem dodgy? They clearly have a reasonable case for greater access to sporting grounds on the final numbers. Their original and revised application still warrant that. The numbers were used for nothing other than this application. The original submission included preliminary data that was identified as incorrect when they were asked to confirm. It still doesn't change the fact they need more access to grounds to accommodate the player numbers in the area.

So it's not a question of AFL fudging numbers it's the AFL not having the correct breakdown for the LGA.
Meanwhile those AR players have no ground within the LGA.
So the LGA cannot spare one ground for AR.
What a great city Sydney is - it cannot allow AR to play on a ground used by soccer because it was once used by rl.
How pathetic.

..
Nice try Cos.

I'll repeat for your info. 'Inadvertently including neighbouring suburbs' sounds dodge to me. [-X

Sydney have over 33k members this year, the most ever! If it weren't for the scg renovations the crowds would also be the biggest ever.

it's not a first time they've been caught fudging figures http://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_...c02.htm#c02f46

Quote:
2.52 In what becomes somewhat of a circular argument, the AFL stated that a Western Sydney AFL team is necessary to consolidate grassroots efforts in a growing market:

We looked at the absolute size of the Western Sydney market and the need for the AFL to have a presence in a market that has the second strongest growing LGA in Australia. Blacktown and Baulkham Hills have significant support from migrant groups ... We are very aware of our challenges in growing that market, and ultimately we need an AFL franchise to continue the work we are doing at the base. The participation in the greater west of Sydney was of the order of 20,000 participants in 2008. We continue to invest in that region and are building a base to be a team at the top.[46]

the real number
Quote:
Information on the public record, attributed to the New South Wales Minister for Sport suggests that actual participation in Western Sydney is fewer than 3,000.[47]

oops

only out by more than 17,000
