King Billy one of a kind with kids

MELBOURNE Storm superstar Billy Slater was king of the kids yesterday. The NRL champion and his teammates hit Gosch's Paddock for the "Billy's Buddies" school holiday clinic.

Aussie rules could not have been further from the minds of the 450 kids who took part in skills and drills sessions, chased autographs and enjoyed the face painting fun. And Slater was a clear favourite, with hundreds of mini-Billys donning the famous No.1 guernsey.

Could an AFL player besides merkin or Falou do this in Sydney or Queensland?

Just more proof that King is right

Wow! Yes pussycat was right to raise the question 'is melbourne starting to fall in love with league?'. And the answer is a resounding YES! Just look at those kiddies lapping it all up in their slater jerseys. Unfortunately justanother the AFL comp does not really have the same calibre of athletes as RL does so the kiddies in syd and bris have less reasons to admire the local AFL players.

The reason Billy is popular in Melbourne is because Melbourne is not afraid of Rugby League, they support all the teams down there whether it be Union, Soccer or League.

Sydney on the other hand would be too scared to treat an AFL player like this. They would be like "its an invasion lets ignore him"

Sydney really needs to grow up & give AFL a chance like clearly Melbourne has with Rugby League

Hi Pete,

Welcome aboard the fight club. :)

I think you'll find that its the head honchos down at AFL HQ, Demetriou and the like, as well as the media journos who've been spruiking the rhetoric of invasion. It's quite hilarious how that fat dumpling Demetriou came out all huffin and puffin with GWS and the AFL's expansion into RL heartland last year and then...when GWS couldnt even half fill anz stadium on their historic first match, his huffin and puffin turned into "this will be a very difficult and long term process..."

I am pretty sure Demetriou was not planning on the AFL becoming the dominant code in NSW (Esp WS) he is just giving the people of WS another code to follow, much like the storm in Melbourne.

We can all co-exist.

However I do agree the signing of Falau was pretty stupid by the AFL.

Weill I think it is safe to say that they have made a mistake signing Falau as he can't play & does not seem to be enjoying it.

But if they did it for publicity then I guess they have done alright, although it has been mostly bad.

What annoys me about Sydney people is even before the signing of Falau they seemed to just hate AFL for no reason. Fair enough they don;t have to like it but why hate it so much.

In Melbourne, altough they are not that popular, people actually don't mind the storm. They certainly dont hate them like a lot of people do in Sydney.

For example late last year Sam Newman mentioned on the footy show how proud he was of the storm & how much he wanted them to win & everyone in the audience cheered for support of them. I doubt that would ever happen on the NRL show for the Swanns...

Interesting points pete. I particularly agree with the 'bad publicity' call. Folau seems to be fast turning into the laughing stock of the league and the folk residing in Western Sydney can smell a farce a mile away. If Israel fails miserably and returns to RL the effect will be a mass of publicity for league and against marngrook in western sydney...

As for your 'sydney people' stuff, I think you'll find there's some prime examples of victorian and melbourne folk in here who fall into a blind rage at the mere suggestion that RL has grown on the folk of melbourne. So i think it'd be more accurate if you insert the term 'bulbous headed loony clowns' in place of 'sydney people'. Dont you? :)

Let me guess, News Ltd... owners of the Storm rounded up them few kids and purchased them all a Slater t-shirt then reported it in their very own publication the Hearld Sun? Comon you know it makes sense.

Not at all Parra

Just appears desperate from News Ltd and their Melbourne franchise. I've no doubt you agree. You just can't bring yourself to say it.

I think it's great that RL's Billy Slater had a Billy's Buddies school holiday coaching clinic in Victoria and 450 young Victorians (plus Parents :) ) turned up.
