Pathetic Whinging from NRL Over GWS Deal with Wagga Council

Post by Beaussie »

Seriously WTF?

The AFL have outplayed the NRL again when it comes to seeking local government support. Stop whinging and whinning NRL and be proactive for once.

Gotta laugh at David Gallop being sent in after the fact.

We have our $300k secured. Hahaha NRL :P
Steve and Chris Mortimer fuming over GWS deal with Wagga Wagga City Council

FAVOURITE sons Steve and Chris Mortimer have labelled "pathetic" and a "waste of taxpayers' money" a decision by Wagga Wagga City Council to enter into a $300,000 funding deal with AFL club Greater Western Sydney.

The council is under fire for paying GWS $100,000 a year for three years in return for playing pre-season games and hosting promotions in the Riverina city.

The move has outraged the locals with rugby league and other sporting codes now demanding their slice of the funding pie.

NRL boss David Gallop has even bought into the controversy and will travel to Wagga Wagga today with Country Rugby League general manager Terry Quinn to seek answers at a meeting with the city's mayor Kerry Pascoe.

"I'll be going down there arm in arm with the CRL to try to get some answers as to why the council is making an investment of this type with the AFL with no similar support for our code,"Gallop said yesterday.

"It's an important issue for us. We've been big supporters of Wagga and the Riverina area for a long time.

"We've had community carnival games and trial games played down there on a regular basis and plenty of promotional visits by players and asked for nothing in return. The CRL funds junior academies in Wagga without any council support and our players and officials were **** the first to visit the area to give flood relief assistance earlier this year.

"It's pretty clear rugby league is gettting the raw end of the deal here."

Steve Mortimer, one of Wagga's sporting icons now living in Sydney, can't fathom the decision.

"Why would you give that sort of money to an AFL club based in western Sydney and ignore everyone else,"he said.

"It shows an absolute total disregard and lack of respect for all the other sports in Wagga. It's a pathetic decision - it really is.

"You give up your time to go back to Wagga as often as you can to promote the city and help give it a profile. And it's not just me. Sterlo (Peter Sterling), Greg Brentnall, my brothers (Chris and Peter) - we've all put our hand up plenty of times to do our bit.

"But decisions like this make you wonder."

Chris Mortimer, a Wagga ratepayer whose son Ned plays Aussie rules locally, can't understand the move and said he's not alone.

"It's caused a hell of a drama down here," he said.

"Why would you give that sort of money to a big organisation like Greater Western Sydney that doesn't need it at the expense of other sporting organisations in the town?"

GWS chief executive Dave Matthews says the AFL has invested $8.5 million over the past decade into development in the Riverina. It has provided $250,000 in capital funding to Robertson Oval, the city's main sporting complex which is currently undergoing a $7 million upgrade.

Matthews dismissed claims from Chris and Steve Mortimer that the agreement with the local council was "pathetic". "I don't expect the Mortimers to be totally across the investment activity the Giants and the AFL have in Wagga," Matthews said. " The reality is we are investing significantly ... It is disappointing that Wagga City Council have tried to do a meaningful partnership on behalf of its community, and develop ongoing benefits, and get questioned for it."

The whinging on LU over this matter is even worse!

For some reason the AFL is at fault for successfully making a case for funding with the council!

This is just a pure case of little man syndrome! The NRL missed out because they're a less significant league with poorer management.

Cry me a river!

Have to say that this is the perfect example of the NRL thinking that the game can look after itself, and then suddenly jumps when the competition does the right thing and gives the game a helping hand at the most important point - the grass roots.

If this is an example of how the NRL looks after it's home state, how can it make any inroads outside of it's heartland? Remembering that south of the Barassi line north of the Murray it's not heartland for either code. It's line ball and always has been. I'm not sure about now, but back in the late 20th century the Riverina Football League was on a par with the major leagues in country Victoria.

If the NRL are truly serious about their game, they should be matching the investment dollar for dollar - and of course they won't do it because they believe that they own Wagga. And they don't and never have.

Needed to be said.

I'd say the Barassi Line is even more firmly entrenched and moving Northward.
Talking to a resident of that area you'd think he was from Victoria.
It has a lot to do with some local strategies like football and netball forming synergies.
Nice try Cos.

That's great to hear. Wagga however has always been AFL heartland. I remember going down there to watch the Swans play pre season games. The town was buzzing and ground was chockers full of Australian Football fans.

Anyway that aside, Gallop went down last week to beg for assistance from Wagga council for the NRL. He was told to fuck off and today... surprise, surprise he resigns as ARLC CEO. More like was told to fuck off again. This time by his colleagues.

Gallop only managed to magnify rl's indifference.
