Khunt getting support from the AFL for three more years

Post by King-Eliagh »

Gobsmacked! I couldn't believe my ears this morning when I heard the news. Khunt staying on a million per season with the AFL's support as a promo bunny.

Does the AFL want to continue looking like the laughing stock of Australian sport? This man is yet to take a contested mark, he's taking the spot of a much more skilled youngster who's played the sport his whole life and he is the epitomy of Raiderdaves perception of the typical fumbling bumbling no skills Victorian Rules player. It's either this clown has a manager who is dealing out high class pros and cocaine to the AFL bosses or the AFL bosses are complete idiots. Its probably both.

At least Israel Folou has taken some contested marks and did a full season in the lower grades. The AFL should be looked down upon by its own fans and legitimate players for this one [-X [-X [-X

In future KE, please do a little research. You clearly know very little about the great Australian game or its players.
Strong and smart, maybe the league boys can play

AFL fans can be a cynical bunch, so nothing was bound to prompt as big an outbreak of scepticism **** the ranks of diehards than the decision of two clubs yet to even play to unveil two rugby league stars as their first recruits.

It's not strictly true that Karmichael Hunt and Israel Folau were on a hiding to nothing when they defected to Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney respectively. But it's been an instructive few days for those who suspected Folau and Hunt, who yesterday was re-signed by the Suns until the end of 2014, would end up as AFL laughing stocks.

There was a moment very early in Gold Coast's NAB Cup clash with Geelong last Friday night that summed up Hunt's potential to offer the Suns some real on-field value as well as all that promotional stuff.

"Football nous is something many believe can't be learnt, even by those who have grown up with a Sherrin in their hands." Photo: Getty Images

Just five minutes in, at a centre bounce, Hunt - given a run in midfield - simply read the tap better than, of all people, brilliant Geelong skipper Joel Selwood.

He controlled a difficult bounce with his left hand, gathered it with his right, then feigned a handball to duck between Simon Hogan and Selwood and bang the ball forward. The result was a goal to Gold Coast's Nathan Bock.

It was so seamless, it made you wind back the tape to make sure it actually was Hunt. As Fox commentator Gerard Healy put it: ''If that was a second or third-year player who'd played 14 years as an apprenticeship coming through the junior ranks, we'd be raving about it. That was a magnificent move.''

Later in the same term, Hunt had another ''was that really him?'' moment, when he anticipated the spills from a Gary Ablett tackle on Matthew Stokes, reacted quicker than Shannon Byrnes, and, changing direction, dived in, collecting a greasy ball with one hand and dishing off a handball with the other to Jarrod Harbrow. The fruits, another mark and goal to Bock.

Football nous is something many believe can't be learnt, even by those who have grown up with a Sherrin in their hands. But those two acts smacked of it.

Hunt finished the night with just six disposals, but those two cameos alone were probably of more significance than most of what he did in his 16-game debut season, even that 55-metre bomb against Geelong in the Suns' home debut.

The next day in Launceston, Hunt's former NRL colleague Folau also raised a few eyebrows, many of the same ones furrowing after his less than sparkling showing in the Giants' NAB Cup first round outing a fortnight earlier.

GWS coach Kevin Sheedy was miked up for Fox at the exact moment Folau showed Hawthorn defender Jarrad Boumann a bit of his strength. ''It's the first time I've seen him aggressive,'' Sheedy drooled. ''He's pretty strong. He's just got to use his body correctly.''

Which Folau began to do from the moment he was thrown into the ruck to start the second half, the increased involvement seeming to ramp up his competitiveness another cog. Then, switched forward again, it all seemed to click.

A couple of strong marks, a clever pass that should have netted the Giants a goal, and then a crunching tackle on the Hawks' Kyle Cheney, from which he should have kicked a goal. Another nice mark yielded another narrow miss but then, within seven minutes, he had scored twice and given off another, taken three strong contested grabs, and laid a bone-crunching tackle. It was strong play. Far more significantly, like Hunt, it was smart play.

All up, it was a good weekend for the AFL's game development spruikers. That's not to say Hunt and Folau have arrived, but you feel however these bold experiments turn out, they won't end in farce.

He's doing a sterling job as marketing focus, and not playing too badly now too!

Great decision!

Who is this Rohan Connelly Beaussie? Football nous? Well i'll give it to Khunt, I'm sure he can read where a ball might go and be quick to get the ball. But does he do this consistently? No, not at all in fact.
Hunt finished the night with just six disposals, but those two cameos alone were probably of more significance than most of what he did in his 16-game debut season, even that 55-metre bomb against Geelong in the Suns' home debut.

 So are those "two cameos" worth the million a season and depriving a player who actually has quality? Seems like you and Rohan think so Beaussie. [-X

The pair of you obviously know nothing of the game and its players.

Xman on the other hand is happy with a promo bunny/gold digger taking advantage of those ridiculous bimbos in AFL management [-X

I have no problem with League players playing professional Marngrook, you would never see it happening the other way around. And I can see the value in promoting the sport these players bring. But seriously, performance is what is important and Khunt has proven all season long that he cant perform. He's taking anothers spot this season as well as lowering the standard of professional marngrook footy on the GC and, by playing at the top level, across the country. The AFL will suffer as a result of this foolish 3 year deal. The promo novelty factor wore off after 3 games of Khunt looking like a chubby lost fat legged boy **** honed professionals. Now you've got 3 more years and 3 million less! [-X The team will be pissed off when he loses them games, as will the talented players doing it tough in the lower grade [-X

Somehow I trust the AFL and their understanding of their marketting requirements and the value of employing KHunt over you. No offence.

There's little evidence showing Khunts value add in terms of crowds/memberships/tvaudience.

The AFL are taking wild desperate potshots to try and be successful in RL territory. Have they undertaken any research on the impact Khunt has made in the GC region??? Any research to validate their multimillion dollar wild experiment?

The jokers down at AFL HQ have no clue.

The only other reason this Khunt is playing can be because he is a good player. And well, we only have to look up his player stats to see he barely touches the sherrin each and every game he plays in.

$$$Millions$$$ down the gurglar and young quality players sitting on the sidelines getting peeved. [-X A disgraceful decision.

Have they done any research on the impact Khunt has had on the game? I certainly havent seen anything and the crowds at the GC last season are certainly nothing to write home about. Lets do our own research shall we Xman. Surely, for another 3 million $, Khunt will be bringing atleast an avg of 3thousand more punters to the GC home games this season? Surely to risk leaving out a much better skilled youngster, denying him of his fair chance to make a name for himself, surely 3k more attending would be the bare minimum level to validate paying the gold diggin khunt 3 more million shmackaroos?

Its a tough research for us layman to undertake effectively as even if the suns do get 3 k more it may well not be due to the Khunt. But if they were to get any less you'd have to say the Khunt experiment has failed abysmally...unless...he learns to take a contested mark  and make more than 2 minimal "cameos" all season long

The Hunt announcement three years ago paid handsome dividends with media buyer Harold Mitchell declaring more than half a million dollars worth of coverage was gained on the day.

That was just the first day and he still remains a media drawcard to this day, earning the code tens of million dollars worth of valuable publicity in the battlefield market.

"From a perspective of the return on our investment in the promotional aspect, he has delivered over and above," Demetriou said.

"It really exceeded all our expectations and we have been delighted with that part.

"But he is also a great leader and a great mentor at the club."

The AFL supremo said he was thrilled the former rugby league international was sticking with the code.

Obviously with us still all talking about him, along with the media, he has, as Vlad puts it, "delivered over and above".
