Problem is that sub-billion figure will be needed to prop up clubs in RL heartland. What will be left to fund expansion or grass roots development?Raiderdave wrote:Beaussie wrote:like the Raiders also don't have a sponsor. What a shambles the NRL is.![]()

Meanwhile the AFL just grow and grow in new markets, and are rock solid in their own heartland.
Lol big difference. The AFL clubs have significantly higher revenue and therefore can afford to tighten their belts significantly. Most AFL clubs have huge coaching panels, support staff and training facilities. These are the first to go in financial troubles, yet the clubs remain strong. The average Melbourne club turns over about 35m a year. If they lose 1 million, which is about all they really lose, they make cuts of 3% for the next year and break even.Raiderdave wrote:hardlyXman wrote:Problem is that sub-billion figure will be needed to prop up clubs in RL heartland. our clubs losses are small ... losses all the same .. but a fraction of the bucket loads being lost by AFL clubs
a slight adjustment & extra TV money .. & its plain sailing
AFL clubs are in serious trouble
as the Geelong CEO said ..... as a sport we're in serious trouble ... our spending as a sport is out of control ... no answers are on the horizon![]()
AFL... in the crapper
oh dear

What are the average NRL club revenues like? Idmsay they'd be pretty small. This means their small losses are are more significant in proportion. Plus most are every single year.
That's a recipe for disaster.
The Optus decision has no effect on TV rights, Beaussie. That only affect online and mobile phone rights. The deal between the AFL and Telstra only is the one that was thrown into the gutter, not the one between the AFL and Seven/Foxtel.Beaussie wrote:Haha, you still think you'll get anywhere near a billion after the Optus decision. Dream on sunshine.
Surely the Optus decision will have an impact on the amount Telstra is willing to pay for online and mobile rights in the total media rights deal. Our contract is signed and delivered on. The NRL.... well...NSWAFL wrote:The Optus decision has no effect on TV rights, Beaussie. That only affect online and mobile phone rights. I seem to remember Raider having a go at the Giants when their CEO departed (now replaced).NSWAFL wrote:Cronulla doesn't have a CEO. That means it's a rudderless ship with no one in administration. That's a joke, never mind the lack of a major sponsor.
My understanding is the $1.25 billion came from TV rights alone. Not the rest. If the NRL try to bundle the lot to try and get around on the other hand.....that would be a dumb business move.Beaussie wrote:Surely the Optus decision will have an impact on the amount Telstra is willing to pay for online and mobile rights in the total media rights deal.
