like the Raiders also don't have a sponsor. What a shambles the NRL is.
Re: Cronulla Can't Afford a Chief Executive and...
Oh dear.
Pack m'em up boys. It's all over. This is RL heartland too. It's not even an expansion team in a hostile market!

Haha, you still think you'll get anywhere near a billion after the Optus decision. Dream on sunshine.
Re: Cronulla Can't Afford a Chief Executive and...
Problem is that sub-billion figure will be needed to prop up clubs in RL heartland. What will be left to fund expansion or grass roots development?Raiderdave wrote:Beaussie wrote:like the Raiders also don't have a sponsor. What a shambles the NRL is.![]()

Meanwhile the AFL just grow and grow in new markets, and are rock solid in their own heartland.

our clubs losses are small ... losses all the same .. but a fraction of the bucket loads being lost by AFL clubs
a slight adjustment & extra TV money .. & its plain sailing
AFL clubs are in serious trouble
as the Geelong CEO said ..... as a sport we're in serious trouble ... our spending as a sport is out of control ... no answers are on the horizon

Lol big difference. The AFL clubs have significantly higher revenue and therefore can afford to tighten their belts significantly. Most AFL clubs have huge coaching panels, support staff and training facilities. These are the first to go in financial troubles, yet the clubs remain strong. The average Melbourne club turns over about 35m a year. If they lose 1 million, which is about all they really lose, they make cuts of 3% for the next year and break even.Raiderdave wrote:hardlyXman wrote:Problem is that sub-billion figure will be needed to prop up clubs in RL heartland. What are the average NRL club revenues like? Idmsay they'd be pretty small. This means their small losses are are more significant in proportion. Plus most are every single year.
That's a recipe for disaster.

Re: Cronulla Can't Afford a Chief Executive and...
Collingwood turnover 75million a year. North Melbourne only 25million. Yet both clubs are viable. There is a huge amount that each AFL club could cut back on expenses.
Such a popular game with huge crowds, memberships and ratings will never be in trouble. A few teams may need to address their expenses but overall they are extremely strong.
The strength of each club allows the AFL to spend their tv rights cash cow on grass roots development and expansion. The NRL will spend their smaller amount on propping struggling clubs up because these clubs get little revenue from attendance and memberships. On top of this a few don't even have a major sponsor! OMG!

Re: Cronulla Can't Afford a Chief Executive and...
The Optus decision has no effect on TV rights, Beaussie. That only affect online and mobile phone rights. The deal between the AFL and Telstra only is the one that was thrown into the gutter, not the one between the AFL and Seven/Foxtel.Beaussie wrote:Haha, you still think you'll get anywhere near a billion after the Optus decision. Cronulla doesn't have a CEO. That means it's a rudderless ship with no one in administration. That's a joke, never mind the lack of a major sponsor.

Re: Cronulla Can't Afford a Chief Executive and...
Surely the Optus decision will have an impact on the amount Telstra is willing to pay for online and mobile rights in the total media rights deal. Our contract is signed and delivered on. The NRL.... well...NSWAFL wrote:The Optus decision has no effect on TV rights, Beaussie. That only affect online and mobile phone rights. I seem to remember Raider having a go at the Giants when their CEO departed (now replaced).NSWAFL wrote:Cronulla doesn't have a CEO. That means it's a rudderless ship with no one in administration. That's a joke, never mind the lack of a major sponsor.
In the NRL they can't even afford a CEO at Cronulla.
Re: Cronulla Can't Afford a Chief Executive and...
My understanding is the $1.25 billion came from TV rights alone. Not the rest. If the NRL try to bundle the lot to try and get around on the other hand.....that would be a dumb business move.Beaussie wrote:Surely the Optus decision will have an impact on the amount Telstra is willing to pay for online and mobile rights in the total media rights deal. No, some was Internet rights. My understanding is Telstra will honor the AFLs agreement. It does put serious doubts on the NRLs Internet component though.

That first sentence wasn't what I heard, Xman. But whatever. I agree with your last sentence but.
Re: Cronulla Can't Afford a Chief Executive and...
Here's a few financial statements showing the difference in the finances of the NRL and AFL.
Firstly Penriths 2010 annual report
http://www.panthersgroup.com.au/sitefil ... imited.pdf
Their total revenue is only 19mil and this includes 3.5mil hand out from the NRl and a trust of 5mil. Without these they actually only earned under 9mil!
Shockingly their gate receipts and Sponsorships total only 5.5mil!
I can't even spot where their membership income is counted.
Now the Melbourne Demons 2011 annual report. The demons are one of Melbournes 'struggling' clubs in comparison to the powers of Coll, Ess, Carl, Rich, Haw, Geel.
http://app1.mailout.com/mailout3/user/z ... 2_0682.pdf
The Demons have a total income of 33.5mil. Gate receipts and sponsorship total 12mil. Memberships total 5.7mil. What a stark difference!
Now for fun, here are Collingwoods details for 2011.
http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/portals ... report.pdf
Total income 75mil. Gate receipts and sponsorship income of Close to 30mil. Membership revenue of 16.5 mil!
but this comparison is hardly fair
The difference is amazing between both codes' lower teams. The NRL are surely struggling. They will need more and more hand outs from the NrL because their membership and gate receipts are so small. Imagine these teams without a major sponsor! [-o<
