GREATER Western Sydney has again signed one of the biggest names in rugby league, but this is not another AFL publicity stunt.
Ned Mortimer, the son of former New South Wales and Test rugby league champion Chris Mortimer, has turned his back on league to pursue an AFL dream with the Giants through their development academy.
Mortimer, 20, the cousin of Parramatta star Daniel Mortimer, turned to league after his dreams of impressing for the AFL draft were ruined three years ago when a knee injury ruled him out of the under-18 carnival with the NSW Rams.
He spent two years playing league, but is back in the AFL fold as a member of the GWS Academy and will be a mature-age top-up player for the Giants in this year's North Eastern League.
Good to see him back
