Rugby league should be worried by threat of GWS Giants, says Fox Sports commentator Dermott Brereton
The Daily Telegraph
December 21, 20118:19AM
Fox Sports commentator Dermott Brereton has warned rugby league that Greater Western Sydney will win a premiership in five years and become the city's most popular team.
Speaking at the Jack Newton Classic, the Hawthorn legend turned commentator said the NRL had no idea "what is about to hit them" and said GWS would take over Western Sydney.
"The AFL is going to make sure that this thing works," he said. "They have the cash and I don't think anyone from Sydney understands what they are in for. Rugby league will be the loser."
Brereton says only Penrith general manager Phil Gould is aware of the threat the AFL poses and the rest of the rugby league community should be worried.
"Rugby leaguers don't really know what they're allowing to happen in their own backyard. It's an incredible sport, it's very catchy and they (the AFL) are going to pump so much into it. It'll be big.
"They've (rugby league) got to get more proactive."
While bullish about the Giants, Brereton says the young side will only win two matches in their debut season in 2012.
The Hawks champion also claimed Lance Franklin was the greatest athlete to have played AFL and could have also been a star in the NRL.

Death to the NRL. Oh and King-Coward do you wear bright AFL footy boots like Dermie?

Re: Rugby League will be the loser
An excellent commentary by Brereton. He is correct that RL clubs need to be more proactive, and I believe I've always said that.
Rugby League has a lying culture. Altering crowd figures, relying on inaccurate TV figures from regional NSW and refusing to distance itself from Leagues Clubs and obtain it's own club memberships as it relies on LC's to survive as private entities.

RD, direct your rants at Dermi not us, he made the comments.
We've repeatedly answered any issues that migh appear in your rants.
I'm a little bit surprised that Dermie made those comments. He's been quiet for some time.
It's good to hear his comments but I think there are a little over optimistic with the premiership in 5 years bit but the way Sydney works onfield success could lead to a very big bandwaggon effect especially as since this is a purely NSW team.

theres no ex pat ******** .. or very few .. in Western Sydney to make this mob look half repsectable ..., it is not an untapped market as the AFL is trying to make it out to be , the general populas have little interest in AFL...it is not new to them .. its been on their tele's & accessible live at games for 30 years ,... they are not interested .. never have been .. they never asked for a side .. there was never a demand for one in Western Sydney.
the AFL are in for the rudest shock in their history & will finally understand how little progress they';ve actually made in expansion in their non traditional areas
or maybe they won't
geez.....that dead horse is in for a hiding

An Adelaide AFL Journalist putting a bit of perspective on Western Sydney & his first experience of the place
dark days ahead ... as he says .. the locals know nothing of AFL ... completely indifferent to it
a honest assesement that should have the AFL worried ... they have bitten off way too much here .. & all AFL clubs will pay the price long term.

THE WAR for Sydney's western suburbs is officially on after GWS conquered the national draft.
But judging by Sydney's reaction to - or lack of reaction to - the draft and the Giants in general these past couple of days, it appears that the AFL's 18th club has a long way to go to win the hearts and minds of those in rugby league's heartland.
Any non-footy types we came into contact with during our 24-hour stay had no idea the draft was even on Thursday night, let alone who or what GWS is.
A cursory glance through that day's Sydney Morning Herald barely told you that the AFL roadshow had rolled in to town, the Daily Telegraph and television news bulletins were only marginally better.
At draft central itself – inside the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre - the Giants were pulling out all the stops, with already signed players putting on clinics and signing autographs for anyone that showed up.
There were merchandise and memberships stalls aplenty, not to mention that there was more orange about than on a fruit tree.
But unfortunately the crowd that showed up to Homebush - a good hour's drive from Sydney's city centre - could only be described as modest and even much of that was made up of the draftees and their families.
Again yesterday morning the papers carried little of what had occurred the night before - although Kevin Sheedy was pictured proudly with his boom recruits on the back of the Daily Telegraph.
And listening briefly to morning radio, any reference to the AFL's big night could not be made without another three to the NRL in some way shape or form.
Giants officials - and even the club's new recruits - are all spruiking the same message.
They know it's going to be tough, but if the game wants to prosper further then Western Sydney is where the game must be.
Everyone, it seems, is well and truly up for the challenge.
But only after heading to Western Sydney myself for the first time since the Giants were born did it become clear just how big that challenge will be.

So what's new ?Raiderdave wrote:An Adelaide AFL Journalist putting a bit of perspective on Western Sydney & his first experience of the place .
We all know Australian Football doesn't recieve the media attention it deserves.
That's one benefit of having a second AFL team in Sydney bringing AFL every week to Sydney.
Does anyone expect a crowd at the draft ?
We already know the GWS project is a big ballsy move by the AFL but so far it looks quite promising.
Corporate sponsorship has been a stunning success. There has been an increase in media exposure.
There has been enthusiasm at local government level an an increase in participation at grassroots level
Foundation memberships were very good. Proper memberships should pick when football regains the focus in the New Year.
Probably the the biggest indicator of all going well for GWS is the level of vitriol from rl fans,
the more GWS succeeds the more rl fans protest.
Don't they RD !!!
Nice try Cos.

That Adelaide journalist didn't do his homework. Not only that, he has not played a game in his life most likely. I would take an experienced fellow like Brereton over a pen pusher any day.
