Marijuana tests confirm AFL concern
By Jake Niall, Caroline Wilson and Michael Gleeson
March 14, 2006

A DISPROPORTIONATE number of indigenous players have tested positive to marijuana under the AFL's out-of-competition testing regime, heightening AFL concern about the impact of the new World Anti-Doping Agency drug code on Aboriginal players.

Sources have confirmed to The Age that the out-of-competition testing program has shown that Aboriginal players made up an extremely high percentage of positive tests to marijuana, the most widespread illicit drug.

There are 55 indigenous footballers on AFL lists in 2006 â€â€

If I was boss of a footy team and player/s kept on testing positive to drugs I'd do 2 things... make sure the player was not in the leadership group and.... if it was chronic, I'd send them to a lesser league.

I still think out of season players should be allowed to do their own thing, but if they know there is this testing in place why would they do it. Either they think they can get away with it or they are just plain stupid, clubs cant be expected to babysit them 24 hours a day.

Yeah I tend to agree with both your comments and those of boof. During competition they should be dropped and certainly not a part of any leadership group, but in the off-season the players should be free of the drug testing I think. I suppose the AFL signing on with WADA or whatever it is makes drug testing even in the off-season necessary. Wonder which players were involved?
