A PEDOPHILE, who molested his five-year-old step-daughter, has partly blamed his time as a rugby league player for his offences, a court has heard. He was in the Court of Appeal today appealing his 15 years' jail sentence as being manifestly excessive. At the man's sentencing earlier this year a psychiatrist's report was tended in which he related how he had unsuccessfully tried to make a career as a rugby league player. He told the psychiatrist there was a culture in his rugby league club where women were "objectified and used and where pornography was openly accessed and enjoyed". The man told the psychiatrist the pornography at the rugby league club did not involve children and he became involved in viewing child pornography only after his league career failed. The court heard the man had been abused by a family member as a child.

He had been found guilty of sexually assaulting a minor more than 20 years ago. The footballers said Bateman deserved his reputation as a pillar in working-class Chester Hill, in Sydney's south-west. He served the local league team, the Hornets, with such devotion the club wanted to name their scoreboard in his honour, but he declined, trained athletes for free, and from 1980 until 2009 filled roles for the Canterbury Bulldogs, including managing many junior representative teams, being the first grade side's statistician and looking after the ball boys.

In a statement released this afternoon, Victoria Police said: "This conversation needs to take place before we consider any further action".
