Its is not the average you look at, have to look at what your crowds were at same time last year, and it is down no matter how you spin it....

AFL after round 1

2012 367,792 Ave 40,866
2013 365,867 Ave 40,652

NRL After round 4

2013 total 585,864, average 18,308
2012 total 539,480, average 16,859

NRL on the up AFL in decline.

Them the facts Swannie get use to the decline.....
NRL's biggest drawing side is the Broncos. AFL's biggest drawing side is Collingwood.

NRL Round 1 2012: Broncos played Away. NRL Round 1 2013: Broncos played at home.
AFL Round 1 2012: Collingwood played at MCG. AFL Round 1 2013 Collingwood played Etihad.

The so-called 'decline' in the AFL's round 1 attendances is a simple fixturing difference between the MCG (78k in 2012) and Etihad (41k in 2013).

The so-called 'growth' in nRL Round 1 attendances is the difference between the Broncos playing at Suncorp in front of 30k or at Parramatta in front of 11k.

Don't just look at numbers guys, investigate them.

So next year if the Broncos play away it won't be a factor in a smaller round total? I'll hold you to that.

But didn't you say there are many variables RD that impact on crowd numbers ? I would say you have a valid point and would not class them as excuses? I think you mentioned the ground used as one variable and which teams are playing as another ? I get confused as you make a really good arguenent as to factors influencing crowd numbers then argue against the point you made as above by saying but but but when people point to the very variables you mentioned ? So I'll ask again I guess, is 20 000 a good crowd in Sydney for a code of football ?

the VFL STILL lost 360,000

theres no variables that can explain this adequately other then the decline in interest in the sport

Raiderdave what you say is just plain wrong and you know it 1st there was 198 games played last year compared to 187 in 2011. There was 10% drop in attendances which equates to roughly 30k+ from 2011, but in 2010 to 2011 the games went from 176 games in the year to 187 with an increase of 3k in attendance but a 2% overall drop when averaged. This is easily accounted for two new teams coming into a competition and there being less interest in the top sides playing those bottom sides. Much the same as when the Superleague experienced with the Adelaide Rams (and I know you will trott out the same old excuses about superleague, news ltd and the ARL). But the fact is new teams as a rule have less crowds until established and have a history with other sides GWS and GC are developing that now (thx to Carmichael-Hunt that will be the case with Richmond). So I don't know where you got ur figures from but don't take my word for it see for urself. http://stats.rleague.com/AFL/crowds/summary.html. Whats worrying is since 2008 the NSWRL has had following
2008 - 1.5%
2009 + 4.8 %
2010 + 1.6 %
2011 - .07%
2012 + .06 %

At a time when Melb Storm has been Sooooo successful and you should be gaining converts left right and centre you have hardly grown at all! You have stagnated! Where is all the growth ur talking a out???? In 6 yrs you have grown by 7k fans

Raiderdave still up to ur usual standard of reply - shit. Still talking about sucking knobs too beginning to have serious doubts over ur sexual orientation.

Love it the mentally unequipped venture forth, love to encourage them, keep weaving those baskets Raiderdave were right here to support people like u with special needs. (No wonder he follows NRL).

I'm still confused , Sydney got a poor crowd of 23 000 ? So you are saying 23000 is a poor crowd for a football code in Sydney ? As a dominant rl town where the culture is not to really turn up in huge numbers to weekly sporting comps I think the swans do okay with 23000 for a game, particularly as you say there are many variables that impact on a games attendance , possibly in this case the quality if the opposition with significantly less support . Averages however , well I don't know what the swans are but I'm guessing if they average 20000 in a rl town like Sydney where there is a poor history of people going to games then I think that is pretty good. I assume that is no where near nrl crowd averages in Sydney in 2012 but you wouldn't expect it to I guess. Again, what would be considered a good crowd and cried average for the season? How dies it compare to nrl or super rugby ?

they used to get 63,000 a few years back & thats when they weren't the premiers
based on this

23,000 is appalling
its beyond appalling in fact ..... & yesterdays 20,000 is just amazingly bad for their first game at home since winning the GF

they are essentially the only VFL side in sydney
