Talking Footy

There's still a lot of nsw blokes running around in the AFL. Why is it such an issue. Swans get great crowds .. Especially in nrl heartland where attending sport is something they don't do well , the have 5 leagues so obviously people are playing the game in decent numbers, and there are quite a few AFL listed players from nsw. Hardly a sign of no interest in Sydney is it? And what's it matter if AFL have a decent following in Sydney ... Doesn't impact on rl or anyone's enjoyment of rl.

And ratings ... Without fox ratings we can't tell actual figures although with the high uptake of fox in Sydney we can assume its a decent proportion of national figure.

They are still doing very well under the circumstances, under the pressure of more tangible issues - such as the SCG renovations like Swans said, and I would add the GWS factor knocking a couple of thousand off the average as well.

And how many kids from Victoria, Sth Australia, NT and Tas were given contracts by RL clubs? None that I am aware and just ONE player who has progressed to senior level from Victoria currently playing! There is still 100 senior and Rookie players on AFL lists - you like to remind us in 100 yrs AF hasn't really progressed much - well RL has a 100 yr history in Australia with next to no progression - in comparison AF is light years in front and doing well! At least we can say AFL NSW and QLD are producing players capable of playing at the highest level you can't say the same!

Agreed Phelpsy there is a lot of FOX viewers but they are never added because it would affect the result!

it's basically a 1 city team with GWS complete trash so it should be expected to have decent crowds. check TV ratings though, absolutely abysmal. and not to mention the fact there are 9 other sydney teams.

He's just trying to get a response again by making bland statements - as has been pointed out to him - the Raiders home crowd average fell this year with the Brumbies having a higher average - so does the same apply to Canberra? Phy don't fall the trap of acting like RD - he doesn't debate he just contradicts - he hates AF and therefore will never concede ANYTHING that makes the sport look good.

haven't dropped dramatically? 10-15% drops is quite dramatic given their recent successes. they won a few years ago if im not mistaken.

RL averages fell because popular teams did poorly, like the tigers, eels, dragons, broncos and dogs to some extent.

what was the SCG capacity in 2012/13?

One could assume that people get pay tv to watch the footy ..particularly in non traditional markets . That's why I have it. It could be that if 1 mil are watching on pay nation wide and fox is say 50 percent Sydney ... Maybe 1/3 of 500000 could be the figure ??? Even that's off the top of my head.
