There's still a lot of nsw blokes running around in the AFL. Why is it such an issue. Swans get great crowds .. Especially in nrl heartland where attending sport is something they don't do well , the have 5 leagues so obviously people are playing the game in decent numbers, and there are quite a few AFL listed players from nsw. Hardly a sign of no interest in Sydney is it? And what's it matter if AFL have a decent following in Sydney ... Doesn't impact on rl or anyone's enjoyment of rl.

And ratings ... Without fox ratings we can't tell actual figures although with the high uptake of fox in Sydney we can assume its a decent proportion of national figure.

The Swans still have a higher crowd average than ANY NRL club in Sydney!! So you are talking out of your arse as usual, Dave!
wow cant believe swans' crowds have decreased over 10 years. i thought they were supposed to be doing really well??

how is he talking out his ***? Swines averaged 34k in 2001, 38k in 1999 and 31k last year up from 29k the year before.
He's talking out of his arse, goose, because that average is still higher than any NRL club in Sydney by a WIDE MARGIN!! They are still doing very well under the circumstances, under the pressure of more tangible issues - such as the SCG renovations like Swans said, and I would add the GWS factor knocking a couple of thousand off the average as well.

Of the 102 first-timers drafted this year, from the national and rookie draft pools, just eight came from the northern states - Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory. It was two before the rookie draft, with only Jonathan Freeman and Jake Barrett taken by the Brisbane Lions and the Giants, who had first dibs on them.

No player was drafted from the Northern Territory this year, at all. Tasmania made up some of the slack; it usually averages a couple of draftees and had five kids taken in the national draft and another two rookies

And how many kids from Victoria, Sth Australia, NT and Tas were given contracts by RL clubs? None that I am aware and just ONE player who has progressed to senior level from Victoria currently playing! There is still 100 senior and Rookie players on AFL lists - you like to remind us in 100 yrs AF hasn't really progressed much - well RL has a 100 yr history in Australia with next to no progression - in comparison AF is light years in front and doing well! At least we can say AFL NSW and QLD are producing players capable of playing at the highest level you can't say the same!

Agreed Phelpsy there is a lot of FOX viewers but they are never added because it would affect the result!

it's basically a 1 city team with GWS complete trash so it should be expected to have decent crowds. check TV ratings though, absolutely abysmal. and not to mention the fact there are 9 other sydney teams.

no one gives a shit about AFL in sydney except a few bumblers from victoria and it also seems to be very popular in some mental asylums...no idea why though. :)))
SCG has had renovations this season and 2012 - which mean a lot of members were relocated from their usual possy at the ground it has had an affect on attendances - but even RL crowd averages fell this year - that's why he's talking out his arse - they haven't dropped dramatically and are still the highest attended of all the codes. He's just trying to get a response again by making bland statements - as has been pointed out to him - the Raiders home crowd average fell this year with the Brumbies having a higher average - so does the same apply to Canberra? Phy don't fall the trap of acting like RD - he doesn't debate he just contradicts - he hates AF and therefore will never concede ANYTHING that makes the sport look good.
haven't dropped dramatically? 10-15% drops is quite dramatic given their recent successes. they won a few years ago if im not mistaken.

RL averages fell because popular teams did poorly, like the tigers, eels, dragons, broncos and dogs to some extent.

what was the SCG capacity in 2012/13?

30k then rose to 34k half way during the season.

the Swines average was 37K in 2007 .... & 24K in 2012  .. a slight bump up to 27K in 2013 but they were the premiers so that's to be expected
that's
CONSIDERABLY LESS

their biggest crowd in 2003 was 72K
their biggest in 2013 was 42K

this again
100% of Sydneysiders have access to FTA
33% to fox

if 50K is the result on FTA in Sydney on average for a Swines game
then you can bet the result for the same game on fox in Sydney would be no more then a 1/3 of the FTA figure .. about 17K on average

Sydneysiders do not care for this bumbling trash Victorian sport & care considerably less in 2013 ... then they did in 2003

Yet they have the largest attendance of ANY code,Largest membership, revenue and sponsorship! Still the biggest in Sydney - lets wait till next year RD and see if the trends continue - Yet Raiders Crowds - down, Football club revenue down, (lower than against RU) membership sponsorship - all down! Canberra may have a hotel group but not a creditable football club!

and yet

they are watched by considerably less Sydneysiders these days .. then ten years ago which is what I said
& I am completely correct as per usual
they are dying a slow death with pretty much just ex pat sthn mindas watching them these days & born & bred locals who may have had a ganda ten years ago no longer having an interest in them or the sport they play plus they also struggle to break even financially & this is with them being a top side .... & as we all know
they are only a top side because of rampant manipulation & cheating ... so.... so much for being a ... 8-[ ( CREDIBLE ) football club [-( [-( [-( [-X [-X [-X [-X [-X

if fumbleball fans fire up sufficiently ( & they are slowly starting to get jack of this shit situation with the swines & good on em )
& the VFL do the right thing .... forced or otherwise & remove this leg up
then the Swines are in vomit creek without a paddle
they will very quickly become a poort poopsalot
broke

& useless

oh dear

I would expect considerable variance in support in a market that it is not the mainstream sport ... You are going to get a large variance in support both up and down. This is rl heartland guys ?

Dave, that logic on pay tv figures has so many wholes in it. But good effort at trying to put an argument forward that doesn't involve your usual drivel of abuse and made up fugues etc.

One could assume that people get pay tv to watch the footy ..particularly in non traditional markets . That's why I have it. It could be that if 1 mil are watching on pay nation wide and fox is say 50 percent Sydney ... Maybe 1/3 of 500000 could be the figure ??? Even that's off the top of my head.

you would expect it based on performance & success... peaks & troths
but the swines were as good here in 2003 as they were in 2013 & have had very few lean years in between ... but alas
the same level of interest simply isn't there

its a coles add
its down .. down .. down for the Swines
Sydneysiders have had a look .. they're not interested

   :(/ :(/ :(/ :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<>

simulcasting of VFL games didn't begin til 2012
Sydneysiders had the highest uptake of pay tv subscriptions well before then .... but mainly for NRL coverage
not ... for that bumbling Victorian crap
the 33% level hasn't moved in about 5 years
to suggest Sydneysiders are now .... suddenly .. watching this bumbling shit on pay .. when they never have in the past on any form of coverage
is

Again, someone with little conception of mathematics or statistic lecturing me. Worse still, how do you argue with an idiot who some how comes up with some weird logic in pay tv ratings and declares them to be fact?

I am not sure why Dave and co are so worried by AFL that they need to feel they have to try and put it down at every chance. What are they worried about ... Do they see it as a threat ? They say they don't but constantly feel a need to defend rl by stating AFL has no interest in Sydney. Whereas the evidence clearly states there is plenty of interest. 5 leagues ... Someone is filling those teams. Crowds ... Even if the swans averaged 20000 that would still be excellent for Sydney. Ratings .., add up all ratings for fta for AFL in Sydney ... Add fox ... Still plenty of interest .., not as big as nrl but people are watching . Media coverage . Papers don't report on things that don't sell ... Especially sport.
