For every thousand that go through the legal system, usually with the result of a slap on the wrist for the perpetrator, prob more than 100,000 go unpunished with the victim walking off with a battered self esteem and perhaps physical injuries. Now im not saying all should respond, as some people like Xman and co just arent brave and physically tough enough to do so. But if you can you should hold perpetrators to account and teach them lessons our judicial system would generally prefer not to waste its time with.

Well I have already stated what constitutes self defence - I don't agree as a general statement that dishing out a physical response is justified or indeed needed in every situation as you suggested - nor does attitude adjustment come under the umbrella of self defence - provocation is relevant to reduce murder to manslaughter but is not a defence. You then diverged into school bullying which you neglected to say that schools will tell kids not to retaliate as it makes any response they do compromised and will usually cloud the issue, bullying is not necessarily physical - when it does become physical there are circumstances that must be taken into account you have just provided a very general example when bullying does not necessarily come in the one act or actions. They are not related and bullying is something that should be handled by schools, parents and the kids. I'll give you an example - a boy call him ted who boxes every day and is very fit has his girlfriend made fun of - when he asks the boy called bill to stop bill tells his friend Fred. The Fred approaches the ted at school and demands to fight - this Fred is smaller than Ted, does no self defence and is far from being fit. Fred also has an much older brother Kev who has been kicked out of school and is known to carry knives. You advocate hitting the Fred, the school says don't, walk away - if he does hit him (and he has been threatened) he runs the risk that the brother will get him later! He could hit him and have no difficulty in putting him in his place The answer - the boy walks away tells the school, the school gets involved and the parents are brought in, it turns out Fred has a long history of problems and will be expelled. No bullying is straight forward thats why raising it is your attempt to justify your ill informed and misconceived point of view! This is a true story

A massive majority of all RL fights occur when someone has wrongfully provoked another and the refs have either not seen or not punished the player appropriately. This is when we all as citizens have the right to respond to respect our dignity and to, to a degree, uphold the rights of citizens to defend against wrongdoing.
