Firstly, RD I am confused as to whether you think a crowd of 20 000 is a good crowd or poor crowd . I know , I know, you are saying that AFL is on the decline in Sydney ... 20K in Brisbane is not

because the NRL in sydney is still a game connected to its suburban roots plays games at a number of venues in the burbs ..
its not a blanket yes or no
many grounds are very small & lack adequte facilities , some barely hold 20K

then theres out of town sides that bring few to no fans with them

the time & day games are played
weather conditions
how teams are travelling ...

lots to consider

so one can really only go on recent history & the broader picture

the fact the NRL has not lost more then 20 fans a game on average in the last 8 seasons in difficult economic times ... with strong competition from live PTV & FTA coverage

while other codes in this same period have had their crowds plummet .... just fall off the charts in the case of a certain victorian game
indicates the NRL is doing fine
