I think hes talking about the sheer numbers across the nation tuning in to this rivalry there adam. Sorry I thought id butt in because you clearly are struggling comprehending the discussion.
I worked out a while back that approx. 1 in 6 melb households has the tele tuned in to SOO each and every year. It mighta been one in four though but yeah you get the drift. There;s simply no bigger rivalry in aus sports.

Depends really on what criteria you use.
To an AFL supporter there's plenty of intense rivalries so many and regular
that we don't have the time for the big build up like SOO.
But the thread is not about what is the biggest rivalry but what has the potential
to become the biggest rivalry. SOO rl is big but IMO the only direction is down.
Obviously the Swans/GWS has the potential to be the biggist.
The question is how realistic is that expectation.
If GWS have indeed turned the corner then 2014 will be a very interesting year indeed.

Your mistake is assuming TV ratings indicates popularity, which is far too simplified. Ratings greatly depend on the time of day the program is shown, and the length of the telecast.

Ratings are still far from perfect and still far to easy to be manipulated.
Ratings companies are paid by TV stations to provide figures to attract advertisers.
It's in the former two entity's interest to produce the higher figures.
There is no measurement of the the quality of the watching.
It is the habit of a lot of Australians to leave the TV on basically in the background
which accrues ratings points and gives a false impression of interest.
Ratings results should always be used with a grain of salt.

But, but but, but if you look at it in terms of these criteria...
Yeah common guys stop shitting your daks and trying to cover it up with twisted realities of what a rivalry is. It's just an embarrassing look guys.
Man up and admit the truth and facts. SOO pisses on any AFL rivalry year after year after year.

Oh my ,you are back to this crap again.
You were laughed at in every forum you posted on,when you tried to claim that RL ratings were wrong because the TV was on & no one was watching..
Seeing as there are only 3000 ratings boxes in AUS& you must declare what you are watching at 15 min intervals, then i would like to know how you can say different.
How can you know this..
Unless you are superman & fly around AUS looking into loungerooms & seeing what people are watching, then what you say is a load of shit.
Just like last time you claimed it
& the time before.
You are a fruitloop.

Which works.
how so, the ratings and Crowds keep declining?
For State of Origin? Provide proof of this claim please.
King Eliagh is right. There is no bigger rivalry in Australian sport. The AFL had the chance to create a similar rivialry between Victoria and South Australia, and they missed the boat.

Man up and admit the truth and facts. SOO pisses on any AFL rivalry year after year after year.

No it doesn't - SOO is not a club rivalry but state v state - AFL doesn't have rep footy in reality so what is it competing against - Wednesday night no AFL games on in fact there is no direct comparison - so what does it mean? Not much really now club for club nothing in the NRL comes even close! Ess v Pies (ANZAC) 90k+, Tigers v Blues 80k+, Blues v Pies 90+, shit Crows v Port, WCE v Freo, Hawks v Geelong, Hawks v Ess etc etc they are all games that rate thru the roof and will have massive crowds! 3 times a year for something with NO competition in a totally different format and representative nature really isn't comparable - would be better to compare it to Bledisloe cup or Socceroos!!!!!

Then WHY do they still have it mid week WHY not on the weekend in direct opposition to the AFL? Because NO ONE in the southern states would tune in - assuming that everyone is interested is not the same as proving - SOO would be front page in NSW/QLD papers - in Vic, SA, WA and Tas it is really mentioned - unless in the form of advertising. You can't have something being the greatest rivalry in Australian sport when half the country isn't involved - ask any victorian, Sth Aussie etc etc which state they go for and they will stare back blankly! Now ask ANYONE in Australia who they are going for in the Ashes and the hatred will be there straight away - Aussie Aussie Aussie - because when it comes to cricket we all hate the poms! But you presuming that a NSW/QLD thing grabs the attention of people outside of those states is typically presumptuous of someone from NSW!
