GREATER Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy says he wants to turn the rivalry between the Giants and Sydney Swans into the biggest in Australian sport.

Sheedy already has a name for clashes between the two clubs: The Battle of the Bridge. The Giants and Swans kick off next season with a stand-alone clash at ANZ Stadium on Saturday, March 24.

Sheedy said there was no reason why the rivalry between the teams could not develop into something greater than the likes of Collingwood and Carlton.

"It's the biggest city in Australia. The Swans have been up there for 30 years, they're established, we're the new boys on the block. What's wrong with it?

Sheedy pointed to two of Sydney's landmarks as inspiration for his idea.

"It must be named 'The Battle of the Bridge'. It's about east versus west. There's the Harbour Bridge, which takes in the north and the southeast of Sydney, whose people are mainly Swans fans, and then there's the Anzac Bridge out west.

"Having lived in Sydney for a couple of years now, it's about the people who have gone west, so that's obviously the Anzac Bridge, and the people who were in Sydney first, and that's the north and south-eastern suburbs."

Sheedy said the bridges should be emblazoned on the jumpers of each side for the games they played against each other.

"When you win a match you get a notch on that bridge, and if you lose you get nothing

The fact that the Giants actually won last night could be the turning point. We shall see.

You bum sniffers don't have much to argue for...grasping at straws comes to mind...

A tread about one of the theatrical comments from KS from the last 40 years...

A thread of desperation and fear...

It's a nervous re-action to bad news by rl types.

Sheedy has made some predictions and they appear ahead of shedule now.
The next Swans/GWS match should be a blockbuster.

It's not difficult to see the potential of a Sydney derby.
Nice try Cos.

Quite an assumption. My mention of it as a turning point is hardly Cockroach/Cane Toad standard. They are still a long way from that and may never achieve it. I do not believe that there is any AFL rivalry that provokes the passions of State of Origin. Some go close (Carlton and Collingwood for instance) but don't get there.

It was a turning point from the point of view of it being a relevant rivalry. Had the Swans won by a big margin matters would be very different.

No, you don't respect the power of State of Origin. Particularly as it relates to television ratings. Show me an AFL home and away game that has rated higher than the top rated State of Origin games.

SOO doesn't necessarily invoke more passion, it engages the majority of NRL supporters including fringe supporters who don't follow the NRL closely. A lot of this relates to the rivalry, not the sport alone.

And regarding ratings, the SOO is midweek in prime time. Compare that to the AFL gf which is shown in one of the ratings dead spots, Saturday arvo.

SOO is state vs state, shown in prime time mid week.
the AFL grand final is shown in the ratings dead spot of Saturday after noon, which easily out rates the NRL grand final which is shown in prime time :D

Cracker you dont know much about AFL do you.

to compare the soo rivalry is laughable, NRL a whole state vs another whole state, mean while in the AFL, you have suburb vs suburb

state of origin is state vs state, the bumsiffers are brought up this us vs them mentality. why is there so much interest in SOO? its state vs state gimmick! then when it comes back to the normal NRL club games, very few give a crap about them. aside from the NRL crowds being shit, for the size of the game they claim it it, read through the NRL & AFL season reports and compare revenue
