The numbers I put up are totally outside the annual grant . they are handouts needed to keep afloat!
Other notable back holes were,
Melbourne , who received an extra $5.4m
North Melbourne $5.6m
St Kilda $9.2m
Western Bulldogs $8.2m
The total for additional handouts to all clubs was $86.8m
whats your point exactly?
My point is, even with the money from crowds and membership half the clubs(at least) still lose money. That's despite clubs receiving there grant, additional handouts totalling $86.8million and probably a similar amount in personal loans. How is this even possible?
it's called equalisation which allows the smaller clubs to compete with the mega clubs revenue wise. The alternative is to leave clubs to their own devices which would mean they would need to cut costs. I wouldnt say it keeps them afloat. It may help keep them competitive though

yeah, some of the expansion teams struggling on field need some extra assistance. But again, they are trying to match resources with far bigger clubs. It's not like they dont earn a reasonable amount of revenue

The Suns profit was less than zero. So no matter how much revenue they made there running costs were greater , even after there $8m dollar grant, a further 8 million in hand out, and an unspecified amount in loans.

A league has failed, seagulls failed, gladiators failed, and the Titans have struggled. Any wonder the Suns have struggled too when they havent even made a finals series yet

The year prior to Murdoch throwing them out of the comp they made the Semis! They certainly weren't given $20m+ in handouts either.

The 20 million is a misnomer I think as each club gets a piece of the broadcast deal and equalisation. And in fact having the extra teams actually brought in more tv rights money I believe. I did read that the running costs for the suns is 40 million and they need to make 20 million outside grants ... so possibly some truth.
