Australian Football League side West Coast Eagles CEO Trevor Nisbett "has accused the clubs of being 'delusional' and 'undisciplined' as they continue to gloss over mounting debts and multimillion-dollar losses," according to Caroline Wilson of THE AGE. Nisbett hit out at the game's "growing financial crisis" as the 18 clubs' combined debts had reportedly topped the A$100M mark at the end of last season, a jump of A$20M on the previous year. Victorian clubs are "responsible for half that debt." :>:: :>::

The AFL had forecast at the end of '13 that the clubs' combined debt would jump from A$80M to A$85M by the end of '14. Instead the increase was "four times that prediction."

you think this supports your case? He's accusing Victorian clubs of being undisciplined ie overspending, he isnt questioning their viability

Expansion looks to be going as planned...... :_<> :_<>

with the game's "most challenging" club -- Greater Western Sydney -- recording an operating loss of more than A$500,000 despite the AFL pouring A$20.16M in grants into the fledgling club, A$3.25M "more than originally budgeted." The Giants "also suffered a fall in marketing and sponsorship income." Another "financial basket case," the Brisbane Lions, lost more than A$3M last year and "is existing upon a debt" of close to A$12M ($9M), "about half of that attributed to its gaming facility." The AFL ploughed an additional A$5M into the Lions last year. The equalization debate "continues to simmer in the background with Hawthorn and Collingwood adamant that the AFL and not the wealthy clubs should be taking responsibility for the poorer clubs"

equalisation is the AFLs biggest challenge. Wealthy clubs are spending like no tomorrow, putting pressure on poorer clubs to spend beyond their means

Fairfax Media revealed early this month that only one-third of the clubs had achieved a profit last year, with the game's most challenging club - Greater Western Sydney - recording an operating loss of more than $500,000 despite the AFL pouring $20.16 million in grants into the fledgling club, $3.25 million more than originally budgeted. The Giants also suffered a fall in marketing and sponsorship income.

Yeah AFL really underestimated how different Western Sydney is to Melbourne.
It is like setting up an AFL team in Northern England and expecting Football and Rugby League fans to suddenly follow AFL.

Better yet, you can sit around with your finger up your arse and do nothing but talk about expanding and then only expand next time someone wants to rip the code in half.
Is better to try to do something right in the first place than sending some racist halfwit buffoon like Kevin Sheedy to try to force a sport in a place that nobody wants it.

AFLs arrogance in Western Sydney was unbelievable. From banning any other sport being played on AFL grounds, to claiming the only reason the Wanderers has more fans is because of all the ethnics.

And then even stealing a top player from Rugby League that had never even touched an AFL ball. Which was all tactical to market AFL to the large Islander community in Western Sydney that follow rugby codes. Of course it failed with him quitting early.

The show of disrespect AFL and the Giants showed was unbelievable. The way they carried on was basically saying. AFL is here now, fuck every other sport in Western Sydney.

At least Rugby League and Soccer don't go into an area and force their sport on people that are'nt interested.

The Giants falling merchandise sales and sponsorship says alot about how people feel about the way GWS and AFL conducted themselves.

None of what I said is bullshit, there were pics in the paper with signs saying this field is for AFL only.
How could they be for an AFL international cup when it is held in Melbourne.
Typical AFL lies.

The difference with League and Union is they buy players from each others codes for their abilities while AFL buy to try to convert fans from other codes.

AFL never bought Izzy for his ability, he was simply an AFL promotional tool to bring followers to AFL. But it failed miserably.
Izzy was not even a good kicker in Rugby League so why else would AFL want him as a player?

And then you get the Sheedy as your promotional racist attack dog for the Giants.
As for failing, it is GWS that is failing while a soccer team gets a huge following in one year with less money and no arrogance.

AFL has really embarassed themselves in Western Sydney. Time they became a bit more humble like Soccer.
