the Storm outrate the Swines

800K for the NRL GF in Melbourne
600K for the VFL GF in Sydney

RL in Melbouren outrates VFL in Sydney

4 biggest RL games in Melb ..... 2 Million
4 biggest flogball games in Sydney .... less then 1 Million

end of
RL SOO II 4.194 Million veiwers
RL SOO I 4.068 Million
NRL GF 3.968 Million
VFL Grand Final 3.620 Million
SOO III 3.364 Million
NRL Prelim 2.219 Million
Kangaroos V NZ 1.214 Million

Sookerwhos V Japan 238K

SOO sold out because it was at a big venue that people wanted. If the Storm played there as well we could up our average by loads!

AFL should be in Tasmania with a team instead of wasting their money (Hi Izzy, Bye Izzy!) on battles that they can't win and shouldn't expect to!

I'd like to see the NRL take it to AFL heartland, but we need bums on seats first and that means improving facilities and making venues attractive instead of TV sets!
The AFL are in Tassie. Theyve been playing there for a number of years now.
What's the name of the team that plays all of their home games there huh?

Whats that got to do with it? Tasmania dont have a big enough population in one region to support an AFL team on their own. Its unfortunate but true.

Errrrrrrrr, on the TV there was the nrl appologising to the warl that it in effect it had led the warl on with no realistic expectations of entering a team in the near future.

.
Nice try Cos.

1 grand final in prime time vs another grand final not in prime time, is in your mind a more accurate data 'set' for comparison than the dozens of games during the regular season featuring the Swans and the Storm, not one of which did the Storm come even close to matching the ratings of the Swans?

Errrr, Geelong dont survive on local support alone. Their following in Melbourne is huge.

The NRL will expand into Perth probabaly in the next 5 years and into Adelaide in the next 20 years. The NRL is growing and both of these cities deserve NRL teams. They will take time to grow in both areas and both areas will have plenty of sub 10K crowds for many years, but just like GC and GWS both will slowly grow.

What? Melbourne isnt segregated into little areas of support like the nRL. I live in the outer south east of Melbourne and I personally know at least 30 Geelong supporters who live in my area. A state team like Tasmania however would be completely different. Not many people in Melbourne would support Tasmania leaving their support to their state only. There arent enough people in either the north or south of Tasmania to support an AFL team.

I wonder if that expansion (if it ever happens) will last longer than 2 years?

You NRL types are funny. AFL gets about 230% of the crowd annually that the NRL gets. NRL half fills small stadiums whereas AFL fills large stadiums. AFL has more money, more fans at games, more ppl watching on FTA TV, soon to be bigger audience on PAY TV, has more players, over 18yo, than Soccer, League & Union combined. Perth with 2m and Adel with 1.4m would really struggle with a NRL team. Perth has 2 AFL teams and a Union team (struggling) but is rich with mining money. However it would be easier for the AFL to put a 3rd team there than the NRL it's 1st. Adelaide is smaller and does not have that iron, gold & gas that WA has. True of both cities though is that they are VERY fanatical about their footy - AFL. Look at crowd attendances in every capital city for the 60s/70s/80s. Adelaide's and Perth's are incredible

You're an idiot! You talked about Geelong. The majority of their supporters live there. Hobart has the same population, so it'll work! The rest of the state can cover any shortfall. So lets' go back and ask why the AFL doesn't have a team based down there? This time don't make excuses!

A high proportion of their fans live there but a significant proportion live in Melbourne. Just like Collingwood has supporters in every suburb in Melbourne

There are many threads on this topic on BF and the majority of people agree Tasmania is too small for a team. If their entire population was in one city or region it would be different but theyre not, and they dont even get along.
