What is Sydney? The Swans or some rehashed Victorian club?

Post by Grim Reaper »

Whats this constant crap about the Sydney Swans having this 'Bloods' tradition? Are the Swans not a NSW team based in Sydney or are they truly just a relocated Melbourne team in Sydney?

It seems that recenlty the Swans have been jumping on this 'Bloods' tradition because it has finally been seen in Sydney that these Swans have no NSW tradition and need to revert back to their Victorian connection to show they have some fotty culture....

It just goes to show that NSW people have no idea what they are supporting and jump on the bandwagon at any opportunity! I wait for the Swans supporters to now start jumping on the South Sydney bandwagon.

The Swans are a relocated Melbourne team as they truly don't appreciate the history they have made here in Sydney. They were the VFL's first expansion team, they had some pretty great stars in their team line up, they forged through the rugby league mindset of the city and became a force to be reckoned with, and now, just to validate their existence they slap on the "bloods" badge.

While I think the increase in supporters for the Swans is fantastic especially in a place like Sydney, I also think they don't need to justify their existence. They are the Sydney Swans, they have been since 1982..

I'm proud of our South Melbourne roots and the fact that to this day we still have a strong supporter base in Melbourne. At last count we had over 9,000 signed up members in Victoria. Compares well when you consider the Kangaroos only have 17,000 odd Australia wide.

It then goes to show then that the Sydney Swans are not a NSW team but just a relocated Victorian club, therefore the only true interstate teams in the AFL are Port Adelaide, Adelaide, West Coast and Fremantle. Brisbane has that Fitzroy (Victorian) connection so does not count. Seems that SA and WA is was is keeping this AFL together.

Oh fair dinkum. Of course we are an interstate team. We play, train and live in Sydney don't we? And Sydney and Brisbane brought more to the negotiating table for the latest TV rights than anything from WA or SA.

It really doesn't have anything to do with tv rights. On any given weekend when there is a home game, the Eagles, Dockers, Port and the Crows play to a sell out crowd. The Swans have never been able to do that..only in a finals..

While the Swans may be based interstate, they are still a re-located Melbourne side

62,000 odd at Telstra Stadium last weekend in Sydney is a crowd figure the Eagles, Dockers, Power and Crows could only ever dream of. Sydney still holds the record for the biggest football crowd outside of Victoria.

Well considering Sydney has a population of 5 million and gets that so-called record crowd to a game is irrelevant. The fact is that when the Swans start to lose those bandwagon supporters move to some other code...the Sydney crowds and their so-called supporters are pathetic....

If Adelaide and Perth had stadiums the size of Telstra Stadium they would get sell out crowds there every week!

Turn it up. Port can't even sellout home finals as is.

No comment on Port being unable to sellout their home finals I see.

Port will be relying on Crows fans to fill AAMI this week.

Its not about having sell out numbers at the home games, its about winning the Premiership that counts! And we have that silverware and it did not take us 73 years to get it!

Telstra stadium holds more people than the Adelaide football ground and Subiaco Oval. Therefore the first game of the season against the Eagles would have more spectators. And when Telstra stadium was first built, it was designed to hold an Olympic sized crowd of 110,000 people. The MCG is not designed to hold that many people.

Still, the Swans have never played to a sell out ground during a regular season game, whereas it is common fare for the Dockers, Eagles, Crows and Port...and this is on their home games...

Too true. When I went back home to Perth I wanted to get tickets to an Eagles game, have to get them months in advance...same with Port and the Crows..
