8,000 tickets remain unsold for State of Origin
Just a week out from the opening game and 8,000 tickets still remain unsold.
I thought this was supposed to be the biggest and most supported game on the RL calendar?

I don't think they feel inferior due to the numbers, Raiderdave. They would feel inferior because they missed out on the chance to really make something out of Vic v SA.

Well you can hardly deny that the AFL had a prize vehicle in their grasp and they let it go for whatever the reason.

yeah I canCracker wrote:Well you can hardly deny that the AFL had a prize vehicle in their grasp and they let it go for whatever the reason.
RL turned it into a prize vehicle
a simply astounding sporting phenomenon
the AFL had nothing like this & were never going to as they have no idea how to do anything outside of a domestic comp

Re: 8,000 tickets remain unsold for State of Origin
Indeed, Miss Penny. The AFL did have something like it, and let it go.
Re: 8,000 tickets remain unsold for State of Origin
The media in qld have been reporting wildly on how the increased cost has impacted ticket sales. They have even added incentives such as memorabilia and clothing. It has certainly been a subject for discussion ..,. But make no mistake ... SOO is huge here in qld .... The ticket sales or lack there of reflects no way any lack of interest . SOO is more important to queenslanders than any nrl match or any nrl grand final. SOO is huge in qld !!!

*applies the brakes*Cracker wrote:Indeed, Miss Penny. The AFL did have something like it, and let it go.
Oh no you don't, Cracker! I'm not letting that one slide! The AFL didn't just "let it go". The clubs scotched it as I remember, and there were several reasons. For one thing, promoting Victoria v SA would have left WA out in the cold and they made it clear they wanted in on it. A three way on the back of the abject failure of the Allies just wasn't practical. For another, club representation has now pretty much wrecked interest, in that every mainland state is represented. That issue doesn't affect the NRL so much because all the clubs bar Melbourne and New Zealand (and technically Canberra) are in two states. Finally, AFL State of Origin rode on the back of one man - Ted Whitten Snr. When he passed away the enthusiasm for state rivalry finally died combined with the other two reasons.
So it's not a case of the AFL "let it go". The fact is we don't need it anymore. Swans came up with an idea that might work, but really the interest just won't be there to get it off the ground. The AFL is club orientated and that's a contributing factor in my opinion to the AFL's much higher crowd average.
