Less than 20% of households in Adelaide and Perth have Foxtel, compared with 30% in Sydney.Beaussie wrote:What... you think all West and South Australians support the Eagles, Dockers, Crows and Power? I guess that would also explain why many of the footy supporters I know in Sydney have Foxtel despite the Swans being shown live each and every week on free to air tv.Willis 21 wrote:You still haven't responded to my statement that AFL coverage hasn't driven subscriptions in AFL states, particulary WA and SA where Foxtel are never permitted to show the Eagles, Dockers, Crows and Power games in those states??

Melbourne, 352.2K, 23.8%

Bea.. where have you gone??
You've run away quicker then Cousins trying to get away from a booze bus....
Whats the latest in this saga?
There have been rumours that the AFL were going to kick in the extra $15 million to Channel 7 and 10 so that Foxtel can keep the AFL...
Do you still hold out a naive hope that all 8 games will be shown on FTA in Sydney and Brisbane?

Looks like nothing has changed and all 8 games will be broadcast nation wide on FTA TV. Me thinks V8 Supercar fans aren't going to be happy with the last paragraph of the above article. Footy galore each and every week on FTA TV. Woo hoo!!! :DMichael Voss in, Cometti on board

WITH Channels 7 and 10 increasingly likely to telecast all eight games each weekend in 2007, the networks are pencilling in their commentary teams.
Channel 10 general manager of sport David White yesterday said his network was going ahead with business in the belief that Foxtel would not be involved.
"Forget all the rubbish that's been spoken, I haven't heard from them (Foxtel) so they musn't be interested," White said.
"We've booked everything and are telecasting four games each weekend next year."
The channel's biggest recruit for its commentary team is likely to be retired Brisbane Lions captain Michael Voss, who will fill the experts' commentary chair vacated by Stephen Silvagni.
Voss, who has not yet signed a contract, heads a quality field for the role that includes Wayne Campbell, Alastair Lynch and Jarrod Molloy.
And Seven's Melbourne chief executive Ian Johnson yesterday confirmed that Dennis Cometti would join Bruce McAvaney to call Friday night games for the network.
"I'm delighted. I've worked with Bruce many times over the years and thoroughly enjoy calling with him," Cometti, 56, said from Perth last night.
"I will be dedicating my energies to Seven on Friday night and one other game (probably Sunday) because I've taken a step back in other areas. I'm not getting any younger."
Cometti's duties with Seven will also include the Beijing Olympics, where he's likely to call the swimming.
Johnson also confirmed Seven would produce a Monday night football program along the lines of Talking Footy. Look out
Joining Cometti and McAvaney on their Melbourne calling team will be two of Brian Taylor, Clinton Grybas or Dwayne Russell.
"We are speaking to those three to find out what their radio commitments are. In Perth, Basil Zempilas will call and in Adelaide we have Chris Dittmar.
"We have been waiting for the agreement to be finalised so we can book OB (outside broadcast) vans. They need to be booked three months in advance."
As for the four days when Seven will have a clash between football and V8 Supercar commitments on Sundays, football will take precedence and the starting time of the motor racing will be changed.

Looks like SBS will be broadcasting footy now. :D
SOS to SBS

THE fight to have AFL matches accessible to NSW fans on free-to-air TV took an encouraging twist last night when SBS emerged as a potential saviour.
Seven Network spokesman Simon Francis confirmed Friday night matches will be sold to SBS or Channel 31.
The AFL, however, must approve any deal – and its strong preference is SBS.
If an arrangement eventuates, it would be the third major coup for SBS in 16 months – following its Ashes and World Cup successes.
When asked specifically if the arrangement would be with either SBS or Channel 31, Francis said: "Correct. They are the two primary options."
The games in question are non-Swans fixtures.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou doubts Channel 31 has the required penetration.
"If SBS were showing it, they have an outstanding reach and they are a great broadcaster," Demetriou said.
"They (Seven) need our consent. That is part of the deal so we'll wait and see."
The ABC could still televise AFL, if they were to strike a deal with Ten.
Under a Seven-SBS arrangement, SBS would broadcast Seven's coverage of Friday night football live into Sydney. That match would also be replayed on Seven about 10.30pm or 11pm.
"Channel 9 (when they had the AFL's TV rights) were not willing to televise that (Friday night) game until about 11.30pm," Francis said. "It will be earlier on Seven and also live on another broadcast platform."
Live free-to-air coverage of both Swans and non-Swans games in Sydney will, in part, fill the void left by the Fox Footy Channel's closure in September. Northern state fans, often starved of AFL coverage and information, were the hardest hit by Fox Footy's demise.
In January, Seven and Ten secured the AFL's $780 million broadcast rights for 2007-11. Part of the deal is that Friday night games are televised live into Sydney and Brisbane. Under the deal, the two networks can on-sell up to four games a week.
Foxtel wanted a four-game package and the free-to-air networks were pushing a three-game package. Neither could agree on a price, leaving Foxtel out of the loop.
"The offer that was put forward last year," Francis continued, "where the matches go live into every capital city . . . in the northern states, the matches would not be seen on Seven in particular or on Ten in some cases. They would be on another broadcast platform."
The "live" clause in the AFL rights deal is an improvement for AFL fans in NSW.
Under the previous deal, Friday night games were shown after 11pm on Nine into the northern states (unless Sydney or Brisbane were playing) or at 9.30pm by Fox Footy.

Looks like 7 & 10 have blinked first...

I've heard from a reliable source that the figure is $50 million a year, and the AFL are so desperate to see Foxtel become involved that they are kicking in the extra $5 million from Foxtels $45 million offerTV rights deal looms
16 December 2006 Herald-Sun
Damian Barrett
FOXTEL, Channel 10 and Channel 7 are hoping to reach agreement on AFL broadcast rights before Christmas.
After 12 months of bluff, a meeting in Sydney yesterday brought the three parties closer to agreement.
Seven and Ten have lowered their financial demands from the pay-TV provider to broadcast four matches a round from next year.
The AFL's free-to-air partners had told Foxtel they wanted $60 million a year. Foxtel said it would pay $45 million a year.
The parties are now working towards a $50-$55 million a year agreement.
Seven and Ten in January committed $780 million for the 2007-11 AFL rights when they matched a Foxtel-Channel 9 bid.
The AFL is desperate for Foxtel's involvement. It sees the pay-TV network as the best avenue for promoting and broadcasting the game in the northern states

Here's my source that demonstrates you're clearly wrong with the above statements.
The AFL has repeatedly denied that it would inject money into any Foxtel bid

Personally I'd be keeping the Channel 7 and 10 shares and dumping the Channel 9/PBL shares as fast as possible. Looks like a bleak year for the Nine Network:Willis 21 wrote:Sell your 7 and 10 shares now!!!
7 and 10 were relying on Foxtel kicking in $60 mil a year for the overpriced rights.. thats a big hole to replace in their budgets...
Nine looks shaky
Sydney Confidential

http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/s ... 14,00.html
CHANNEL 9's status as the No.1 network looks shaky, with nine of its US shows axed and a weaker sports schedule set to dent ratings this year.
The latest shows cancelled in the US which Nine were hoping would prove ratings success stories once the local TV ratings war begins on February 11, include dramas Kidnapped and Justice, reports TV writer, Stephen Downie.
Kidnapped, which Nine is still promoting in its 2007 line-up, lasted just five episodes in the US before being deleted due to poor ratings.
Meanwhile, legal drama, Justice, was canned after 12 episodes.
A Nine spokeswoman said, at this stage, the network planned to air episodes of both series.
Other US shows already dropped include Smith, which starred Aussie Simon Baker, Runaway, The Nine and comedies Big Day Happy Hour, Help Me Help You and 'Til Death.
Adding to Nine's woes next year, says media analyst Steve Allen, is the fact it has lost the AFL to Seven.
"In our view, Seven will win the year next year and by a bigger margin than Nine did this year, and that's solely based on the AFL (going to Seven).''
Presently, Seven has had a good run with its overseas content deals delivering top ratings shows Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and Lost.
And at least three of Seven's big US shows for this year - Heroes, Ugly Betty and Brothers & Sisters (starring Aussie Rachel Griffiths) - have topped the ratings in the US.
"That's the luck you get,'' Mr Allen said. "A couple of years ago it was Seven which couldn't win a trick. All it had was (drama) 24.''
Nine is by no means the only network to have been affected by cancelled programs.
Seven's Day Break has been axed as has Ten's 3lbs.

Firstly welcome lawnman. Which team do you support? Personally, I don't want to see Foxtel get any games as I don't feel we should have to pay to watch footy in addition to the fact that even if I was willing to pay, Foxtel is not available in my area. I assume you guys over in the west will be alright with the FTA option. Us footy supporters in the northern states will however have to rely on Channel 7 & 10 striking a deal with SBS to ensure Friday night and Sunday twilight games are live in NSW and QLD.
