I don't think it is appropriate to compare the American experience in private ownership with Australian, especially as if I remember the Green Bay Packers are not privately owned.

I also don't think that using News Limited and the Storm is appropriate either, given that I think the real reason they off loaded them was because of the salary cap scandal and for no other reason.

I acknowledge the view that Smith has about private ownership. It is a little convenient however given the Knights issue with Tinkler is still relatively fresh. So it would be the popular thing to say. As you say, the Broncos have done well with it and in Perth I think you will find that using the negative backlash against the Western Force could be a cornerstone to garner private interests - such as that of Crown at Burswood.
news ltd sold off the storm, because they pumped millions in to them, over the years. many free ticket give aways & pages dedicated to them in the herald sun, (the main paper in vic). the storm cost news ltd millions.

the broncos are a different case & only work, having a lot of success through out their history. being the only team in a city of over 2 million people where NRL is the dominate code. and are backed up by a massive leagues club. if the NRL was going to expand a put a second team in Brisbane like that has been suggested many times. the off field success of the broncos will fall somewhat

Hold on. Since when was the Herald Sun the "main" paper in Melbourne? The market there is close to equal when I last looked between The Herald Sun and The Age. It's the same in Sydney between the Telegraph and the Herald.

The Storm only became a liability to News Limited when the salary cap scandal broke. They did basically what the NRL should have done with the Ram and the Reds, and if it hadn't been for some fools within the club they'd still be doing it now and yelling at the Melbourne City Council for an increase in the capacity for AAMI Park. If I remember Crown Casino had an interest in the Storm also at some point before the scandal.

No they weren't. It was only when the scandal broke that they became a liability. Prior to that, they were an asset.

Several AFL clubs are in the same boat so that's not a valid point.

Just for you from 2010
The annual reports show Melbourne turned a $1,648,600 profit last year, the only time it finished in the black during the contentious five-year period.

the herald sun its the biggest selling paper Victoria
http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-bu ... -igkz.html
an old article but the 2 big main papers the Age and herald sun
In Victoria, the Monday to Friday edition of the Herald Sun maintained its place as Australia's biggest selling metropolitan daily, selling 518,500 copies and up 0.1 per cent from a year ago.

The weekday Herald Sun also increased its lead over Melbourne's The Age, where circulation fell 1.5 per cent to 200,800.

the storm has always lost money costing news ltd millions way before the salary cap scandal

That last sentence requires proof, please.

Also I would suggest that you incorporate the Saturday Age into those figures and I think you will find that the Age makes up the difference quite strongly.

those figures are average on the monday to friday run.
if you want to add the week end age in as well, the herald sun does a saturday and sunday edition. the herald sun rapes the the few people by it.
