But the Casino isn't part of WCE or Freo - the point Adam is making is without their leagues club to support them any Perth team would be financially not viable.Cracker wrote:Adamj1300 obviously hasn't heard of the Burswood Casino.

Ah gentlemen did it occur to you that the casino could be the owners of the new WA NRL license? I'm not saying that they have expressed interest. I'm simply making a point.
Also, I would like to see proof of the banning of poker machines in WA outside of the casino.

they arn't banned they just haven't passed legislation through the state parliament allowing poker machines in pubs & clubs, it is pretty common knowledge. the only place that is allowed to have them is the casinoCracker wrote:Ah gentlemen did it occur to you that the casino could be the owners of the new WA NRL license? i'm not totally up to speed in why, considering pokes are every where in the other states and territories

Oh well, that'll be a good sponsor for them.

I think that rather depends. There have certainly been examples of bad private ownership (Edelsten, Skase, Tinkler), but handled correctly it can work. Particularly if it is used as an opening springboard as would be the case for a new NRL club in Perth.cos789 wrote:Private ownership hasn't been a good model.

in the papers up here in qld, there was an article about david smith talking about the NRL going away from private ownership.Cracker wrote:I think that rather depends. news ltd owns the broncos and they are by far the wealthiest NRL club, but they use to own the storm, but after loosing millions in them, news ltd sold them off.
if a new team was to start off it would be interesting. who will invest?. the crown casino in Melbourne use to do the storm, crown are also owners of the burswood casino in WA.
private ownership is big over in the USA, but in Australia, not to many have been successful across all football codes.

I don't think it is appropriate to compare the American experience in private ownership with Australian, especially as if I remember the Green Bay Packers are not privately owned.
I also don't think that using News Limited and the Storm is appropriate either, given that I think the real reason they off loaded them was because of the salary cap scandal and for no other reason.
I acknowledge the view that Smith has about private ownership. It is a little convenient however given the Knights issue with Tinkler is still relatively fresh. So it would be the popular thing to say. As you say, the Broncos have done well with it and in Perth I think you will find that using the negative backlash against the Western Force could be a cornerstone to garner private interests - such as that of Crown at Burswood.
