Within a club like Collingwood for example, the crowd will still vary depending on their opponent. It takes two teams to attract a crowd, not one. That's why the away crowds should be taken into account. Not just for supporters of the away club, but the willingness by other fans to see that team. Is it right for the Suns to ignore fans at away games who go to see Gary Ablett Junior? No it's not.
Exactly the reason away games should not be taken into account.

We look at home games as a measure of sustainability of that club.

Looking at the benefit to the league as a whole is a different and usually lesser issue.
Nice try Cos.

Away crowds skew the result far depending on the opposition. The crowds vary according to the home teams following. I don't go to the Ess v GC to watch Gary Ablett. I hope my team holds him to minimal influence so we have a greater chance of winning.

If a club can't draw away from home it's in trouble and needs twice as much at home to gain any benefit. This is why the AFL tried to get clubs to play odd games in other places. The NRL have done it also for the same reason. To help the clubs gain a wider appeal away from home.

sorry Cracker
you're wrong & the other fumblers commenting in here are .... for once

dead right

the only attendances to be taken notice of for a club should be their home crowds
no weight should be given to their away attendances & really

not much to their home games played away from their normal home venues
RL SOO II 4.194 Million veiwers
RL SOO I 4.068 Million
NRL GF 3.968 Million
VFL Grand Final 3.620 Million
SOO III 3.364 Million
NRL Prelim 2.219 Million
Kangaroos V NZ 1.214 Million

Hey Crack up - the REAL reason why the Melbourne AFL clubs play elsewhere is because there are only two venues in Melbourne!!

why cant AFL teams play games in Tassie, Cairns and NT?
those places are not financially sustainable to base a team there, so why not still at let the local still have their fix of AFL and play games there

And why not count the crowds there? You don't want to it appears. That's a bad thing.

You are ignoring them. They are not irrelevant. If they were there would be no AFL games in Cairns, Hobart, Launceston or Darwin because there would be no benefit. There is a benefit.

Really, why count home and away when people can't afford to go to Nth QLd one week, go to a home game the next, then have 2 away games that could be in Vic, WA, NT or Auckland, do you think all fans of footy codes don't work and are millionaires with time on their hands?

Ffs, some perspective please.

Plus another fact, the NSW and Qld regional centres where RL is bigger than in the cities makes it almost impossible for fans to go to games each week. They usually pick 3 or so games a season they can get to, yet according to fans of other codes which are more central to the big cities, these people don't count!

Here is some perspective. Are you suggesting that there are no supporters of Sydney, GWS, Brisbane or Gold Coast in Melbourne? If your answer is "Yes", guess again. Do you also believe that there are no NRL supporters in Melbourne or even Victoria that do not support the Storm and yet go to AAMI Stadium as an opposition supporter? I have gone to AAMI Park every time the Bulldogs have played the Storm. But according to you, I don't count towards the Bulldogs attendance figures.

What a skirt.

regional centres......

The AFL is a national competition.
We have fans in WA, SA, NSW, Qld, Victoria Tasmania and NT.
I think interstate travel is a bit more daunting than a quick trip to the Hunter.
Nice try Cos.
